Here's some exciting news ... I'll be speaking at the Baltimore Inner Harbor Boat Show ("Trawlerfest") Sep. 30th - Oct. 2nd. đ It was a turn of luck that the new boat brought us up to the Chesapeake for the summer so I was in the area to make this happen. For any of you planning to attend, enter promo code ANNIEDIKE for a 15% discount on all seminar tickets and thank the BIHBS folks for it. Our Niagara ... Once it was finally determined, after the carnage she had suffered during Hurricane Sally, that she was going to be salvaged, repaired--she was going to live!--the thought of buying a new(er) boat and turning her over to another couple who would sail her, learn from her, cherish her the way Phillip and I had, didn't sting quite so much. The reason Phillip and I had decided to buy a new boat was not because Plaintiff's Rest is not capable of sailing around the world, she is. Perhaps not as comfortably or safely as an Outbound 46, but, capable she is. And, our Niagara loves to go! She was built, and maintained, and trained to go. She deserves to go. And her new owners, Chris and Megan, deserve all that she has to offer in equal measure. For those of you curious about our Niagara's new chapter, check out today's blog post up and HaveWind and rest assured she is very much alive and living! Elle est Vivante! âľď¸â¤ď¸ đĽ°

With our last-minute New Years Eve flight to see the last remaining Outbound 46 available on the market, s/v Ubiquitous in Annapolis, Maryland booked, one thought kept ringing through my mind. âFor offshore, we couldnât have made a better choice," a former Outbound 46 owner had told us in the days prior. Phillip and I wouldn't know until we set foot aboard her, but everything about this boat was telling us she would not disappoint. "For offshore ... " I thought to myself as I dozed off on the plane. Up today on the blog: Stepping Foot Aboard Ubiquitous. Check it out at HaveWind! đ

âI ⌠might have found her,â Phillip said, his voice lifting at the end with just a little too much hope.
By her Phillip meant our new boat, our new home, our new adventure. It was a hypnotic day, when we first looked on yachtworld for an Outbound 46 and found one (ONLY ONE) was not yet under contract. To find out if the Outbound was the right boat for us, we had to set foot aboard. Up on the HaveWind blog today, the listing and details for the first Outbound 46 we looked at: s/v Ubiquitous (2015). Enjoy!

After we made the tough decision to sell our wonderful 1985 Niagara 35 and get a newer, more complex boat, the next tough decision was what kind of boat (length, model, age, etc.) would prove itself the perfect boat for us. After some serious soul-searching (and boat p**n ogling) we finally settled on ... (drumroll please) ... the Outbound 46!đđ Read more on the blog up at HaveWindWillTravel today to learn more about our decision.
Why the Outbound 46? First, the Outbounds are not mass-production boats. They generally only build between one to two Outbounds a year, because they build them right. Phil Lambert commissioned the design from Carl Schumacher, with the idea that every feature be designed to be capable while comfortable. One word sold us. MODERATION. Lambert wanted a boat that was exceptionally strong, with a fully-glassed hull and encased keel, that did not sail like a tank. Schumacher fulfilled with a moderate draft, beam, and mast height that proved a fun day sailer, a capable ocean-crosser, and a spacious, luxurious liveaboard home simultaneously. Sailing in brisk winds and choppy seas, Lambert described the experience below as âbeing in a library.â In addition to the immensely impressive tankage and power/water generation systems that would allow us to go comfortably off-grid at any time, a thousand other little commendable features sold us: clear visibility from the helm, no ducking down the three, wide companionway stairs, locking floorboards, a crash bulkhead in the bow, fuel vents located high on the stanchion posts, curved counter edges, an island queen vberth bed. All of this in a boat with a beam of only 13â6â and a draft of 5â6.â Every element spoke to a commitment to moderation, which I feel speaks to so many elements of life: work, play, food, wine. Enjoy, imbibe, thrive, but do them all in moderation.
Now. The next tough decision. New or used? We will share soon! You might say we didnât really find our ânext chapterâ boat. She found us. Stay tuned! đ

Yikes! Four more travelers were grated across the rocks by an unexpected wave at Queen's Bath in Eleuthera. While this is sad news, I felt it was worth sharing. This poor guy, James (along with three of his friends) were, like me, raked across the rocks at Queen's Bath by a rogue wave. I hate he did not find my post until just days after it happened, but he left this comment at HaveWind to warn others just as I have tried to do. Spread the word. BE CAREFUL AT THE GLASS WINDOW AND QUEENâS BATH IN ELEUTHERA!! https://havewindwilltravel.com/2020/09/27/queens-bath-recovery-dat-a-bit-big-dere/

Happy 245th Birthday Marines! From the Corps to Cruiser, Phillip has taught me the full meaning of honor, courage, and commitment. Happy Birthday to all of our fellow Marines out there. Can I get an Oo-rah?

Wednesday, September 16th, 4:00 a.m.: As Sally swirls around, winds now out of the south lash the wall of our house with such force I am afraid to stand in front of a window. Tree limbs the size of small vehicles crash raucously to the ground. Transformers explode like bombs. The power goes on and off. Our Hurricane Sally saga continues. Enjoy the read! (This message brought to you by sailors spared the wrath of Zeta : ).
Ch. 2: Sally Wreaks Her Savagery, in the Dark When the Tuesday 4 pm forecast hits, the heart of every boat owner in Pensacola thumps to a lurch.  What had previously forecast as a minor hurricane poised to make landfall on âŚ

Plaintiffâs Rest is stripped clean (again) and bundled up for Zeta although it appears this hurricane will actually go where we thought Sally was going! But all bets are off until it makes landfall. Plaintiffâs Rest is under a watchful eye, however. The gallant s/v Distant Drummer, an exquisite Tayana, who is also a bartered survivor of Palafox Marina, will keep a close watch on her. These two boats were actually shipyard neighbors in 2018 as well. Itâs amazing sometimes to reflect back on all of our chapters. Hold fast Louisiana. You certainly did not deserve a third this year! đ @ Pensacola, Florida
