Arcadia Mill Archaeological Site needs our help! It has lost most of its funding to keep it's museum open and staffed for guided tours. This week it has been vandalized since no one is around to care for it and there's not any funds for repairs. Arcadia Mill, located in NW FL, features an historic house, a boardwalk trail, and a museum.
Historic Pensacola and Arcadia Mill staff worked tirelessly today to get the Arcadia Mill and Homestead presentable for visitors. We may have got the truck stuck. We may have had to pick up so many piles of limbs and debris, but in the end we found this little turtle. And all was well. We may be in two different counties, but we are one family working to keep Northwest Florida history alive. Arcadia Mill Archaeological Site

Last Thursday we co-hosted a kayak tour of the Blackwater River with Arcadia Mill Archaeological Site. While it is important at this time to follow public health advice and implement social distancing, many state parks remain open with reduced hours (even though events and group activities have been cancelled). We are lucky to have so many natural resources with water access in our area. Check out the Blackwater Maritime Heritage Trail for more information on where you can go to experience the local history and archaeology outdoors.
Oh the weather outside is frightful, but our meeting will be so very delightful. So if you've no place to go, come on out and help our program grow...watch us grow...grow...

Freedom’s Eve | Bringing in the New Year 12/31/2021

Freedom’s Eve | Bringing in the New Year

Did you know that New Year’s Eve also signifies Freedom’s Eve? December 31, 1862 marked the night before the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Lincoln. In the years following and still today, Watch Night services are a tradition in which many African American church congregations come together to celebrate New Year’s Eve and the end of slavery with praise, fellowship, and hope for the future.
