With Hurricane Sally today I was thinking how much better a location Bagdad is compared to Navarre. I'm looking forward to being able to visit the center.
What a great plant sale event today. A huge turn out and hats off to the employees for a job well done!!
Want to share
If I have canna leaf rollers / Brazilian skipper butterflies.

Should I leave them alone, Can I put one in a jar to watch it transform?

Would you guys like to have them? They are so cute!
Can you tell me what kind of Caterpillar this is
Is this friend or fo? It was eating my Canna Lily leaves
Look at tail wings?
Over the last few weeks we've had many hungry catapillers join our household! We had an amazing opportunity to watch these beautiful little critters turn into a beautiful Monarch 🦋 butterflies!! This is just a lil video I put together to watch the transformation ! 🦋💕
I asked a fellow new Florida native plant group friend to help me identify these black eggs on my Passion flower vine but I just want to double check with the experts as I found conflicting pictures online. They are everywhere. What are they?

The Panhandle Butterfly House & Nature Center engages visitors with Florida native butterflies and their native habitats. We have relocated from Navarre to Milton and plan to reopen in summer 2021.

Operating as usual

Proud momma here! I just released 14 monarchs into the world. These are the batch that finished up on cucumbers and squash. So it worked!

It's #wildflowerfriday! A wonderful flower is blooming along the wet areas of Santa Rosa County, with a spectacular bloom right now on Dickerson City Rd. It is the beautiful and interesting Tracy's Sundew (Dorsera tracyi). It belongs to a group of plants called Sun Dews, most of which are very small, lying flat on the ground. This one has long tendrils that can get to be 12" high, and display a beautiful pink flower that attracts insects. The Sundews are carnivorous, exuding a sticky, mucilage on their leaves that traps tiny (gnat sized) insects, which they absorb.

Santa Rosa County has so many beautiful and interesting plants!

Today is Cinco de Mayo! It's the perfect opportunity to talk about one of our personal favorite butterflies: The Monarch!

One of the world's most astounding natural events occurs each year featuring the delicate Monarch Butterfly. Every November, the forest located between the Mexican states of Michoacan and Estado de Mexico is covered in millions of Monarchs, who travel on a remarkable 2,500-miles (the longest migration of any insect) from the northeastern United States and Canada to their ancestral wintering grounds in the volcanic mountains of central Mexico.

As you grow your gardens this year, keep an eye out for Monarch caterpillars. They have a long trip ahead of them come this fall!

It's #wildflowerfriday! The White Top Pitcher Plant is one of the showiest of the carnivorous plants found in Florida. They trap their prey when an insect flies or crawls into the pitcher looking for moisture or food. Downward-facing “hairs” prevent the insect from climbing back out, and it is dissolved by the plant for nutrients. They are currently in full bloom in our area, and this photo was captured by one of our volunteers at the Yellow River Marsh Preserve State Park!

My milkweed is completely defoliated! Luckily the caterpillars were in their 5th instar, final stage before turning into a chrysalis, and they can eat cucumbers and squash. So I made crudites and gathered my fatties to protect them from the lizards.

It's #WildflowerFriday! Coralbean (Erythrina herbaria) is named after its coral colored seeds. In the Spring, red tubular flowers -sometimes up to 3 inches long -grow on tall stalks, drawing hummingbirds and butterflies. In the fall, as the rest of the summer garden starts to fade, seed pods begin to mature and turn dark - almost black - and split open to reveal shiny, scarlet red seeds nestled inside. They're very pretty—and very poisonous, so be sure to keep them away from kids and pets.

It's #WildflowerFriday! The Florida Flame Azalea (Rhododendron Austrinum) is a deciduous flowering shrub that puts out STUNNING and fragrant Spring flowers. It is an excellent ornamental plant that works well as a specimen or in a mass planting. Once established, it is easy to grow and requires little maintenance but does not do well in saltier areas of the coast. This is a state-listed endangered species.

DIY Hanging Sphere Planter

This is so simple to make, and won’t the pollinators be happy?

Our Story

We are permanently closed in Navarre. We have not relocated yet but we are working on it.

Follow us for updates on all the new fun activities and classes for both children and adults!

As the only educational butterfly house in the region, we take pride in what we strive to do:
Promote & Protect the Pollinators. We educate, we interact, we have fun with our visitors and we love the environment and our community!

We started out 21 years ago with a simple hoophouse where people could come and enjoy butterflies. Then we started educating the public about butterflies. Visitors asked questions and we took on the task! Our 100% trained volunteers dedicate their heart and soul to the PBH. Donate your time, talent or treasure! We’d love to have you join our volunteer and/or supporter family!
