Blackwater River Foundation, Inc.

Preserving Historical, Cultural and Natural Resources in the Blackwater River Watershed The Blackwater River Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that preserves historical, cultural and environmental resources within the Blackwater River watershed that might otherwise be lost.

The Foundation's most recent accomplishment is the closing chapter of a seven-year restoration of the T.W. Jones House. The Jones House is a Craftsman Bungalow in appearance and is a classic example of mixed architectural styles adapted to existing buildings when domestic modernization was taking place in the early 20th Century. In addition to the restoration of the T.W. Jones House, the Foundation has fostered successful projects such as the creation of the Bagdad Waterfronts Florida Partnership, development of the Bagdad Mill Site Park, creation of the Bruce & Ollinger Shipyard Park, creation of the Blackwater Watershed Stewardship Program, and land management of the Clear Creek Whiting Field Florida Forever land acquisition. Current projects include the Blackwater River Watershed Master Planning Project and the planning aspects of creating the Blackwater Education Center at the T.W. Jones House Estate. The Center will provide meeting, office and classroom facilities for public use. It will also include a resource library on the local environment and local history. To learn more, please visit our website.

The BRF parcel south of Jones Street (purple) is only accessible from Jones Street. The City of Milton is advocating that the purchaser of the North Parcel (blue and yellow parcels) will have to provide an easement to the BRF to retain access to our southern parcel!! Why should a private land owner be required to encumber their property to provide access to a parcel for which there is already a platted road? Who will be responsible for paying for the lost development rights over the easement? This in essences describes an additional taking of personal property rights above the current situation we are asking to have reversed.

For those interested in the State Statute that governs the vacation of platted streets, the requirements, process, and prohibition of creating an alternative process - we post the State Attorney Generals opinion along with our two letters sent to the City of Milton. This is the background that led to the current illegal Revocable License document created by the City of Milton Attorney (Heather Lindsey) in 2015.

[10/24/16]   It is with sadness that we say goodbye to one of our founding members, Pat D'Asaro, who passed away over the weekend. For decades, she championed local preservation and empowered others to do so, as well. Her passion for our community will be long remembered. Our thoughts are with her family during this sad time.

Please read about the history of the T.W. Jones House and its historical significance to our community.

[03/29/15]   We are excited to share our progress in implementing steps towards development of the Education Center with the clearing of Jones Street and a partnership with Foundation neighbor Gary Pruitt for the establishment of our community gardens! A more detailed master plan is in the works and the education pavilion design is soon to follow. Pictures soon!

[03/20/15]   We sadly announce that our longtime friend and supporter Susan Fishbaugh passed away earlier this week. Although we will miss her tremendously, her spirit will continue to shine on all of us as we continue to celebrate the good work she helped accomplish in our community. We love you, Susan.

Dr. J.B. Turner House roof replacement

We'd like to send out a big THANK YOU to Terry Sowell Roofing for their great work re-roofing the historic J.B. Turner House in Bagdad! After three years and many roofers who never delivered, Mr. Sowell's crew got right on it as promised. The Turner House was built in 1916 and was home to the village's doctor and his family for nearly 60 years. Once one of Bagdad's showpiece houses, the house fell into disrepair in the last 20 years. The house was in threat of "demolition by neglect" until the Foundation was able to secure the house from several owners. If you'd like to help see this house preserved, please visit and find out how you can help.

Thanks again NAS Whiting Field First Class Association. We really appreciate your help with the brush clearing at the Jones House!!

[02/11/12]   Hello, Friends! The Foundation is seeking recommendations for roofers that would be willing to roof the J.B. Turner House in Bagdad, and who are willing to repair some roofing on another building. We can't seem to find any roofers willing to do work for reasonable compensation. Please send us recommendations to [email protected].

Special Thanks to the Chief's Association for their help in removing a large portion of the remaining invasive plants behind the Jones House Education Center on Sept. 9, 2011. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Jones House

In case you haven't seen the Jones House in a while, take a look at our photo gallery. The house sure has come a long way from when you could stand in the parlor (on plywood planks to prevent falling through the floor) and see the sky. Our hundreds of volunteers, thousands of hours, and advocacy was only successful because of YOU, our supporters.

To prevent having to cut down palm trees planted by the Finkelstein family more than 75 years ago, Gulf Power and the Blackwater River Foundation worked out an agreement to relocate trees that have lined Henry Street more three generations. Thanks, Gulf Power!
