Wren Heltzel, a Midland, TX native, graduated from Greenwood High School and is pursuing a Music Education degree. Her favorite instruments to play are the marimba and marching cymbals. While her focus is percussion, Wren also plays piano and saxophone, the latter of which she pursued as her music minor. In her free time, she enjoys knitting, cosplay, and reading.
Wren appreciates the respectful communication and the balance of fun and professionalism within the UTPB Percussion Studio. She values the collaborative environment and the ability to connect with her peers.
When asked about her favorite piece performed with the studio, Wren couldn’t choose between “embedded siGnals” and “Gravity.” Both pieces hold a special significance for her.

Sydney Martinez, from Odessa, TX, graduated from Permian High School and is currently pursuing a Music Education degree. Her favorite instrument to play is the snare drum. Beyond percussion, Sydney also enjoys singing and playing guitar, showcasing her diverse musical talents. In her free time, she enjoys “shenanigans” and, of course, practicing her instruments.
Sydney values the camaraderie within the UTPB Percussion Studio, particularly the relaxed and supportive atmosphere of her section. She appreciates the connections she’s made with her fellow percussionists.
Of all the pieces she’s performed with the studio, “Tanc Szervus” stands out as a favorite. Adding to her exciting year, Sydney is getting married this year to fellow percussionist, John Eychaner!

David Wagner graduated from Legacy (Lee) High School and is currently pursuing a Music Education degree. His primary instrument is the drumset, though he also participates in choir. Outside of music, David enjoys painting miniatures and playing video games. He’s had the unique experience of working with five different percussion instructors during his time at UTPB.
David’s favorite aspect of being in the UTPB Percussion Studio is the strong sense of camaraderie he shares with his fellow students. He values the friendships he’s forged within the program.
One of David’s most memorable experiences with the studio was performing “Tanc Szervusz.” This piece holds a special place for him among the works he’s played during his time at UTPB.

Moses Derr, a resident of Midland, Texas, completed his high school education at Greenwood High School. Currently pursuing a major in Music Education at UTPB, Moses has a particular fondness for playing crash cymbals and timpani in symphonic winds. His passion for music extends beyond performance, as he finds immense joy in organizing and maintaining the equipment within the UTPB percussion studio.
When he’s not immersed in the world of music, Moses enjoys indulging in his hobbies, which include building with Legos and eating meals with his peers. His favorite pieces performed with the studio include “embedded siGnals” by Lauren Teel and “Unhinged” by Dr. Andrew Veit.
With a lighthearted touch, Moses also mentions that he wouldn’t object to anyone helping to fuel his Dr. Pepper “addiction” after concerts.

Here’s our Director of Percussion Studies!!
Dr. Andrew Veit, a distinguished percussionist and educator hailing from Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, embarked on his musical journey at the University of Iowa, where he honed his skills in Percussion Pedagogy and Performance. His passion for rhythm and melody led him to master a diverse range of percussion instruments, with a particular fondness for the enchanting kalimba. He also shows skills on bass guitar when he gets the chance.
Beyond his musical pursuits, Dr. Veit finds joy in the simple pleasures of life. He enjoys spending time outdoors, indulging in a round of golf or maintaining his physical fitness through regular workouts. His dedication to his craft and his students is evident in his role as an esteemed faculty member at the University of Texas Permian Basin. He thrives on the energy and enthusiasm of his students, and finds great satisfaction in sharing his knowledge and passion with them.
One of his most memorable experiences with the UTPB Percussion Studio was performing the dynamic and exhilarating piece “Beserker,” composed by Dr. Caleb Pickering. The intricate rhythms and powerful melodies of the piece resonated with both Dr. Veit and his students, creating a shared musical experience that they will never forget.
Dr. Veit’s love for music extends beyond the classroom and the stage. In his personal life, he shares his home with a beloved cat named Remo, named after the musical instrument manufacturing company.
