Tonight I had one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had as a patient in an Emergency Department.

I went to the ER after suffering a serious reptile bite that left my finger visibly mangled and caused severe pain. I was scared, overwhelmed, and in tears. I expected to receive medical care, but I also expected to be treated with basic compassion and respect. Unfortunately, that was not my experience.

From the moment the doctor began interacting with me, I felt judged because the injury involved one of my reptiles and because I operate a reptile rescue. The comments and overall attitude I received made me feel like I was being looked down on rather than cared for as a patient.

What bothered me most was the complete lack of concern for my pain. My finger was visibly injured, I was crying, and I was clearly in distress, yet no pain relief options were offered before treatment. The doctor proceeded with numbing injections directly into my injured finger. Anyone who has had those injections knows how painful they can be, especially when the finger has already suffered significant trauma. The pain was so intense that I screamed during the procedure.

What happened next is what really stuck with me. After leaving the room and later returning, the doctor asked if he needed to shut the doors again because of my screaming earlier. Instead of showing concern for the amount of pain I was experiencing, the comment came across as sarcastic, dismissive, and completely lacking empathy.

To make matters worse, I was discharged without any prescription pain medication and without any meaningful discussion about how to manage the pain from such a significant injury once I got home.

I understand that emergency rooms are busy. I understand that healthcare workers are under immense pressure. I also understand that not every patient is going to leave happy. But there is a difference between not getting the outcome you wanted and feeling like your pain and concerns were never taken seriously in the first place.

No patient should feel judged because of their profession, hobbies, or lifestyle. No patient should feel mocked for crying out in pain during a medical procedure. And no patient should leave feeling like they were treated as an inconvenience rather than a human being who needed help.

I don’t often make posts like this, but this experience genuinely left me feeling hurt, frustrated, and disappointed. I hope sharing this encourages healthcare providers to remember that compassion and bedside manner matter just as much as medical treatment.

Now I’m sitting at home, in SEVERE PAIN, left feeling neglected.

UPDATE: Late last night after being in extreme pain and unable to sleep I went to ANOTHER emergency department. They were APPALLED at the treatment (or lack thereof) that I received. They even said the stitches were not correct but didn’t want to put me through more unnecessary pain. They properly treated me, gave me pain medication (which the other provider didn’t), splinted and wrapped me (which the other provider didn’t), explained my aftercare (which the other provider didn’t), and most importantly made me feel safe, seen, understood, and cared for!

Everyone welcome the newest member of the ERX family, Blizzard, aka “Blizzy”! We got him all settled in today with a warm soak with electrolytes and some shed ease solution because he came to us with LOADS of stuck shed. We managed to get most of it off, potentially saving one of his limbs that had the circulation cut off to it from the stuck shed. He’s a happy boy now taking a much needed nap from today’s adventures! He is such a sweetheart and we’re so excited to have him here! 💚
