Heading into Christmas, all our colleagues, friends, and family are in our thoughts. We appreciate you all and wish you a happy and safe holiday season!
A few weeks ago, we posted about the design services AIE is providing in Bucks County, PA, on a 2-span, reinforced concrete T-beam bridge. Now, we’d also like to share how we enhanced the as-inspected condition documentation process for these services by utilizing innovative technology methods to quickly collect data. By using a laser scanner to capture the complete structure, our team was able to produce a 3D point cloud with accurate, measurable data. This also facilitated capturing the as-inspected dimensions and conditions of the bridge to aid load rating analysis and formulate appropriate repair recommendations. The new design includes concrete repairs to the beams and deck, waterproofing membrane installation, a new bituminous wearing surface, concrete/masonry repairs to the abutments and pier, scour protection, and approach guide rail installation and end treatments. #ImprovingLifeByDesign #Engineering #Infrastructure #Bridges #LoadRating #BridgeDesign

CS&I City Water Substation, Mount Kisco
Over in Mount Kisco, NY, AI Engineers’ inspectors have been busy supervising the installation of a new modular substation on the Metro-North Railroad Harlem Line. This project will improve resiliency by bridging two segments, and the new substation is being constructed on a raised platform for flood protection.
In addition to providing construction supervision and inspection services, AI is monitoring the project schedule to guarantee milestones are met and is collaborating with other stakeholders to ensure all operations remain uninterrupted.

Last week, the AI team set out to create a topographic map of the Grassy Spring Reservoir with its exposed shoreline. The floor control project for the Town of Greenburgh in Westchester County, New York involves re-directing water from a tributary of the Sprain Brook to the existing Grassy Sprain Reservoir in order to provide flood volume controls. The existing Reservoir was once used as a major water supply by The City of Yonkers from 1876 up until the early 1970's. It no longer functions as a water supply, however, the dam must still be maintained to avoid flooding hazards to the public. Recently, the city drained most of the water from the Reservoir to access and repair several items in the dam. Interestingly, the drainage of the reservoir exposed an old road crossing or possible original dam structure in its lower area - a feature of the landscape previously unknown to the city. https://newyork.cbslocal.com/video/4452551-where-is-the-water-in-yonkers-grassy-sprain-reservoir/ #Mapping #Survey #Water #Wastewater #ImprovingLifeByDesign
ConnDOT Reconstruction of Interchange 33 on I-95, Stratford, CT
AI is providing construction engineering and inspection services on I-95 in Stratford, CT for ConnDOT. The project involves widening the existing I-95 NB Exit 33 off-ramp from one lane to two, the creation of a new I-95 SB off-ramp, and a new I-95 NB off ramp. It also involves the construction of a new bridge structure carrying a new I-95 SB Ramp over Route 1 NB.
The footage below is from our Existing Conditions Mapping Survey a few weeks ago! A very interesting project indeed!

Cumberland Elementary School UAS Survey
Last Friday, AI supplemented its traditional #survey services at Community Elementary School in Cumberland, RI, with #drone collected data. This information will be processed into survey-grade CAD files, which will include all line work and surfaces. Despite high winds and freezing temperatures, the operation was successfully performed before an impending snowstorm. Implementing #innovative #technology such as this allows the site #mapping to be completed in a more timely and efficient manner. #ImprovingLifeByDesign #UAS
AI's Stacker S2 3D Printer
New year, new tech! AI is excited to introduce our #3Dprinter! The Stacker S2 boasts a build area that’s nearly 2 feet tall, over 1 foot wide, and 1 foot deep, allowing AI to offer in-house 3D printing services at an impressive scale. Now, we can bring our robust #3Dmodeling capabilities to life, offering tangible deliverables and effective visual aids. 3D prints can depict site conditions, test complex geometries, and allow a glimpse into what completed projects will look like. Our new Stacker S2 will help us keep our #NewYearsResolution to continue providing innovative services to our valued clients. #3dprinting #innovation
FAA National Drone Safety Awareness Week - Infrastructure
We’re in the middle of the Federal Aviation Administration's National Drone Safety Awareness Week, and today’s #infrastructure focus area fits us perfectly! This high-mast inspection video from our operation in Boston performed by our #UAS pilot Mike Giacco shows exactly why #drones benefit our #inspection efforts. Whether providing quick access to hard to reach places, keeping our inspection teams off the roads and away from traffic, or minimizing operational expenses, it is clear that this #technology is a valuable tool for ensuring safe infrastructure in the communities where we live and work. #DroneWeek #ImprovingLifeByDesign
AI Engineers - Drone Safety Week
It’s FAA National Drone Safety Awareness Week, and AI is excited to share some of our recent projects that utilize our in-house drone resources! As always, AI is a strong advocate of operating drones responsibly and in accordance with all federal, state, and local regulations. This video demonstrates how AI’s drone pilot Mike Giacco was able to provide a means of safely observing a bridge sidewalk demolition from below the deck. Coordination with the FAA to operate in this Class D airspace and an authorization to perform this work past civil twilight were necessary. We are proud to offer #DroneServices like this to help improve safety and quality of life in the communities we serve! #DroneWeek #ImprovingLifeByDesign
AR Model - Castle Craig, Meriden, CT
#Augmentedreality is another great way AI Engineers shares data with our clients. This model of Castle Craig at Hubbard Park in Meriden, CT, is a perfect example of how we can immerse people in the environments we map, inspect, or design.
Using #Autodesk, #ReCapPhoto, and #Pix4D #photogrammetry software, data collected during a short drone flight is transformed into a #3Dmodel.
Then, using the #torch app and #Revit, we create #AR experiences that not only allow you to navigate the model but also include interactive icons that display important information, such as hours of operation, fun facts, and directions from your current location via Google Maps. Click this link to download Torch and view the model seen in the video for yourself: https://lnkd.in/eFVMtNa
