Kazem has a proven record of planning, design, construction, and materials testing on challenging projects of various complexities, including signature bridges, major interstates and highways, railroads, and train stations. For over three decades, he served as Chief Bridge Engineer and Chief Engineer with RIDOT. During this period, Kazem provided leadership and guidance to hundreds of professionals in bridge design and inspection, highway and traffic engineering, environmental research, claims management, project scheduling, property acquisitions, survey, and project scoping. His railroad experience includes extensive coordination with Amtrak and other railroad companies.Â
Â
Kazem will provide leadership to AIE’s bridge and highway professionals and work closely with our regional offices in New England, including assisting with project management, quality assurance, and business development.Â
Â
Kazem has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from the University of Rhode Island. He has served on various AASHTO committees on bridges and structures as well as highway and traffic safety and is also a founding member of ACEC/RI.
In the meantime, a temporary timber bridge has been installed over the existing deck to ensure minimal disruption to traffic.

Over in Warwick, Rhode Island, AIE bridge inspectors have been providing statewide on-call bridge inspection services and emergency repair designs for Centerville Road Bridge.
The design features a new WT-shape to replace the cutout damaged portion of the existing girder, structural vertical and horizontal splicing between the WT-shape and the existing girder, as well as new diaphragm connections to the girder.
These designs will increase the roadway’s safety, reliability, and access for drivers as well as extend the lifespan of the bridge.
Thank you for reimagining the possible and building a safer, more sustainable world for our communities while inspiring future generations!
Happy Engineers Week!
To ensure minimal disruption to traffic, our design consists of replacing the existing superstructure and maintaining the substructure, allowing construction of the replacement to be completed in a single construction stage with local traffic detoured along a town-approved local route. Additionally, the project also includes utility coordination, survey, wetland flagging, environmental documents, permits, geotechnical analysis, hydrology and hydraulic engineering, and public outreach.

AI Engineers has been playing a pivotal role in providing CEI services to help ensure the safety and efficiency of construction on I-95 in Norwalk, CT. Next month will see the first of the project’s Accelerated Bridge Slide maneuvers for the pre-constructed structures that will carry the interstate over Saugatuck Avenue!
Complementing this, an extensive environmental initiative is underway with a massive infiltration basin near Hendricks Avenue in Norwalk, ensuring better water quality for the Norwalk River. Additionally, road safety is getting a boost with the redesigning of the median, the introduction of full shoulders, and the ramp improvements for Interchange 17.
Managing the busy traffic of I-95 in Norwalk, ensuring the well-being of the surrounding communities in Norwalk and Westport, and adhering to tight schedules, especially the season-specific bridge slide, has required meticulous planning and adaptability.
Stay tuned for more exciting news on this project as the bridge slide weekends are fast approaching!

One of our talented engineers stumbled upon a feathered friend during a site visit in Montana! Nature's beauty never ceases to amaze, even in the midst of our work.
AIE is currently providing on-call load rating services to the state's department of transportation. While diligently collecting measurements and assessing the conditions of one of the over 1,150 bridges we are responsible for under this contract, we also took the time to appreciate the local wildlife from a respectful distance.
Swipe to witness Montana's winged wonders!

Our team had a blast at the CALS 2023 Golf Tournament held at the scenic Grassy Hill Country Club in Orange, CT! We had an amazing day on the greens, some great laughs, and an all-around wonderful time connecting with fellow golf and surveying enthusiasts. Thanks to everyone who made this fantastic day of golf and camaraderie possible!

Yesterday our Middletown office celebrated the end of summer with lunch from Salsa’s 3 and watched a cricket match. Everyone was able to come together, enjoy zesty flavors with perfectly grilled fillings, and have a fiesta for the taste buds. Shoutout to them for elevating our lunch game!

Last week, our AIE team of golfers participated in the CTDOT Fall Golf Classic in Farmington, CT. The team secured an overall 5th place finish out of 72 competing teams, while also shooting an impressive 12 strokes under par. A great day out was had by all who attended, and we look forward to taking part in future tournaments.

Heading into Labor Day weekend, let's take a moment to honor the backbone of our nation – the hardworking men and women who tirelessly give their best, day in and day out. Their dedication not only builds our cities and powers our industries but also shapes our future. Every brick laid, every task accomplished, is a testament to the power of unity and perseverance. Let's celebrate and be grateful for every hand that contributes to our collective progress.

AIE had the privilege of joining fellow engineers at the NYC Bridge Conference earlier this week! A melting pot of global bridge engineers, operators, designers, and more. From groundbreaking papers to deep dives into bridge design and operation, it was a hub of innovation and knowledge sharing. Here's to bridging gaps, not just in infrastructure but in collaborative learning too!

Sometimes, engineering takes us beyond the blueprints and into the realm of awe-inspiring beauty. Yesterday, our team had the incredible privilege of experiencing something truly unforgettable during our site visit to the East Haddam Swing Bridge.
As engineers, we're passionate about creating structures that stand the test of time, but today, we were reminded that our work also connects us to the rich biodiversity and breathtaking landscapes that surround us.
The East Haddam Swing Bridge Project entails a comprehensive overhaul of the bridge's structural, mechanical, and electrical facets. Upon the bridge's refurbishment, which AIE is providing CEI services for, it will offer a secure passage over the Connecticut River for both vehicles and pedestrians on Route 82, lengthen its lifespan, and enhance the reliability of its swing span operations.
We're excited about the positive, upward trend in our nation's infrastructure, especially our bridges. According to the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), last year saw a 1.3% decrease (560 bridges) in poor-condition, structurally deficient bridges. This improvement is linked to the influx of federal funds from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, as reported by Engineering News Record. You can learn more about these improvements from reading the article and the report published here:https://artbabridgereport.org/reports/2023-ARTBA-Bridge-Report.pdf https://www.enr.com/articles/56951-small-gains-in-us-bridge-conditions-but-still-a-big-backlog #:~:text=The%20report%2C%20released%20on%20Aug,the%20that%20category%2C%20ARTBA%20says.

To wrap up summer on a sweet note, AIE’s HQ had a delightful visit from the Vecchittos Italian Ice truck yesterday! Our team enjoyed these cool, refreshing flavors, taking a moment to unwind and indulge.
From friendly chats to contagious laughter, the Italian Ice added an extra layer of happiness to the mix!

Yesterday, a group from AIE’s Massachusetts team attended the North Washington Street Bridge Reconstruction presentation. Having assisted with the project’s lighting design, we were very excited to see construction underway.
North Washington Street is a major throughway that connects Charlestown to Boston and has been named the gateway to the city from Boston Harbor. With our Massachusetts office's recent move to Charlestown, we also have some local interest in the area!
It was great to learn about the new bridge with this excellent event put on by , and a very informative tour by the presenters.

Earlier this week, AIE’s Elizabeth Befikadu took to the stage at the AASHTOWare Rating and Design Bridge User Group (RADBUG) Meeting in Madison, WI, to present on "Substructure Analysis Using BrR to Get Force Effects," where she outlined the contrast of current written guidelines between superstructure and substructure analyses in the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation.
