Early South Florida observers described an ecosystem so full of birds they could darken the sky. Then came the plume trade and relentless hunting, which decimated many wading bird species.

This past weekend I kayaked more than 10 miles for the chance to photograph a long lost South Florida resident, the American Flamingo. Seeing them wearing that hot pink plumage was more than an amazing moment, it’s a strong sign they’re finding the nutrients they need out here, and a hopeful hint that Florida Bay is still a suitable place for them to forage and stick around.

Park staff also mentioned they may be nesting in the area. If that’s true, it could mean that this species is re-anchoring itself where it once belonged! 🦩🦩🦩

I recently watched a video posted in a Miami account of a fisherman that hooked a shark on this same beach. If you look closely this shark is dragging a fishing line that’s about the length of its body. Coincidence?
Guess who’s back 🦈
