I am a fan of Mickey Mantle. You probably know his dad's name was Elvin. He had the nickname of "Mutt." I cannot find out from anyone on any Mickey Mantle sites or anywhere else how Elvin got the nickname of "Mutt." I was wondering if maybe any of the older members would know how Elvin received the nickname of "Mutt," since they lived in your area. Thank you. Respectfully, Michael Wagner
I am trying to identify the name of this late 1930s Miami restaurant and the people in the photo. The woman standing and talking to the man sitting at the counter is Ruth Nesbitt Wills. The man with the mustache looking at the camera I have seen in other photos. If I had to guess, I think this is Tucker's Restaurant when it was next door to the First National Bank.
HELP! I have a photo of my father with his classmates in front a school that someone wrote on the photo "Welcome School 1922-23". I also have a document (attached) clipped from the 1947 Norse Wind that describes Franklin School. The article mentions that the Franklin School was nicknamed "Cracker Box", which is the name my dad told me about. My dilemma, is Franklin School and Welcome School the same school, or were they separate schools? Thanks
I am in this photo, 2nd from right, along with three other premie's born at Miami Baptist Hospital that was published in the Miami New Record in October 1949.
Hello,
Recently old family photos were past down to me. One is a 1910-1911 school room in Miami, Oklahoma. The date and location can bee seen in the photo on the calendars on the back wall. I'm hoping to identify the persons in the photo and the school name. I also have have a photo of a teacher that maybe connected in some way. Can someone suggest local persons that may be able to verify & provide more information on it?
Thanks for your time.
Dave

Our Friday Find this week is about George Patrick "Pat" and Barbara (Reynolds) Bradley.

The photographs within this post are from their wedding day on June 11, 1950 at the First United Methodist Church in Miami. The photographs are from the collection of the late Orrick Sparlin, who was a longtime photographer in Ottawa County. The newspaper article from the Miami News Record announcing their wedding is also in the post.

The Bradley's were longtime members of the Ottawa County Historical Society and active within the community in a variety of organizations and ways.

Pat was born on November 16, 1921 in Miami, OK to Harry and Sybil (Bailey) Bradley. He passed away on July 15, 2014 in Tulsa, OK. Barbara was born on January 4, 1931 in Miami, OK to Charles and Jennie (Pratt) Reynolds. She passed away on February 19, 2013 in Dallas, TX.

Friday Find at the Dobson Museum
September 9, 2022

Our Friday Find this week is about Will Rogers Middle School. The school was built in 1947 with plans for the school being put into place back in 1945 with enrollment increasing for residential areas and houses being built in the NW part of town. The school was not completely ready for the start of the 1947-1948 school year, so buildings were moved from Camp Crowder to accommodate classes, cafeteria, etc. before students started in the Will Rogers building.

We have new and exciting display taking shape on our lawn with the stone reliefs off the old Will Rogers Middle School officially arriving this week. If you drive by the museum in the coming weeks you will see the east of end of our building taking on a new display with the stone reliefs being pieced together to display with some historic photographs on banners outside the museum.

We have some photographs today from 1964 when the Faculty of Will Rogers Middle School dressed up for Oklahoma Day in honor of the 75th Anniversary of the Oklahoma Land Run. Do you recognize any Will Rogers Middle School Faculty from 1964?

We look forward to hearing from anyone with photographs, stories, or memories of the Will Rogers Middle School. We also have the plaque off the building that is on display currently in the museum beside the plaque off the old Miami High School Building.

Remember we started our new summer hours! We are open Tuesday-Saturday 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. and Closed on Sunday and Monday. If you have a collection to donate or interested in volunteering at the museum. Give us a call or email us.
