For the past two weeks I've been working on one of the most complex I've ever covered. It's also one of the oldest.

This one hits close to home for NBC 6 because the victims were the father-in-law and brother-in-law of one of our longest serving anchors.

You may be able to help detectives finally solve this case and bring the family much needed answers... and possibly justice.

I hope you'll join us tonight at 6 p.m. for our story on the double-murder of Clarence and Brian Gehrke.

Life (and the news) comes at you fast so it’s easy to forget to take a moment, look around, and realize how far you’ve come. Every time I get to step into this studio and anchor the news I’m reminded that I’m living out my childhood dreams.

Getting here wasn’t easy. It took grit, sacrifice, faith and blocking out the naysayers. This work has always been more than just a job, it's a calling. Telling your stories and giving you a voice is my passion.

To borrow a line from my friend Jose Diaz-Balart, thank you for the privilege of your time.

I’ll see you on NBC 6 and from time to time… en español Telemundo 51!

It was a great morning at Seminole Elementary School’s career day. I was invited by my middle school and high school classmate who’s a teacher at the school. We were also joined by another middle and high school classmate, Martica Lopez, who also gave a presentation. Haven’t seen these ladies in almost 20 years - a wonderful career day brought us back together! It’s such a blessing to see great people thriving in their field.

Thank you to Ms. Alvarez as well as the principal and staff at Seminole Elementary for such a warm welcome. But most of all thank you to the wonderful students, especially the school’s news team, for the thoughtful questions!

Looking forward to next year! As the aspiring journalists say in their school broadcast…”Keep smiling Seminole Panthers” 😊.

On Tuesday, Feb. 6, I celebrated 1 year with NBC 6 and Telemundo 51!

Before I joined the team I had been out of the news business for a year and a half and man did I miss telling stories. Being a storyteller is what I'm meant to do. I believe that in my core.

Thank you for trusting me to tell your stories! Hoping I get to do this work for many years to come.

Who killed Shirley Brant?

Two North Miami Beach Police Department detectives came out of retirement to help solve the 1986 of a beloved mom, wife and real estate agent.

I had the chance to speak with the detectives last week.

The two men responsible for Shirley's murder have never been charged.

Please watch and share the story. You never know who may have the tip that could help solve this case.

I’m baaaack! On Facebook and in news that is 😊 took a long time to get Meta to agree to a name change on here but we figured it out and now I can finally show you what I’ve been up to these past couple years. I’ve missed y’all!

After leaving Action News Jax in May 2021, I joined St. Johns County as its Director of Public Affairs where I met wonderful people and learned a lot about how local government works in one of the fastest growing counties in Florida. Then, in January 2023 I was presented with an opportunity to return to journalism in my hometown, Miami. It’s been a life long dream of mine to report in the city where I grew up and where my family still lives. As you can imagine…I couldn’t pass that up.

I’m now a reporter at NBC 6 and from time to time you’ll also see my work in Spanish on Telemundo 51. For those who followed my career in Jacksonville, you may remember that covering the Hispanic community was and remains a passion of mine. I now get to report the news in two languages in one of the most dynamic parts of our country.

While Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, will always have a special place in my heart, being back in South Florida this past year has been in one word…fulfilling.

Here are a few photos of what I’ve been up to. You’ll see some pictures of me reporting and anchoring with my new colleagues. I also had the chance to return to my high school, Southwest Miami Senior High, and interview my favorite teacher who’s still teaching there and chat with the new generation of students. It was one of my favorite memories from 2023. Of course, I’m still covering storms as well as cold cases, and having a little fun in the studio whenever we can, we had a visit from the Minions last year (pic below).

You can now watch my stories on NBCMIAMI.com or on your streaming devices, just search for NBC South Florida News.

Thank you to my Duval family for your warm embrace and for the love you showed me for so many years. It’s one of my life’s greatest blessings. I hope you’ll continue to follow my career and journey in South Florida.

And by the way, I still visit Jacksonville every now and then so if you see me please, please say hello! It would make my day.

Love always,
Lorena
