Emotional intelligence as conceptualized in the use of 360 degree feedback was positively related to overall performance ratings of potential leaders. The current findings support the notion that potential leaders who demonstrated a humble pattern or an accurate pattern of self-rating scored significantly higher in their leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal/communication skills than those with an aggrandizing self-rating.

Twelve service chiefs participated in 360° feedback surveys and coaching as part of a departmental leadership development activity. Ten behaviors were identified as improvement opportunities and nine behaviors were identified as behavioral strengths at baseline.

The past decade has seen intense interest and dramatic change in how hospitals and physician organizations review physician behaviors. Using 360-degree anonymous feedback surveys to screen for improvement opportunities in physician core competencies enables organizations to selectively offer education to further develop physician EI. On the basis of a literature review, we determined that physician EI plays a key role in leadership; teamwork; and clinical, financial, and organizational outcomes.

The relationship between Quality PULSE 360 feedback scores and measures of patient satisfaction reaffirm that feedback from work team members may provide helpful information into how patients may be perceiving their physicians’ behavior and vice versa. Surgeon behavior, as assessed by 360-degree review, is associated with malpractice claims. These findings highlight the importance of teamwork and communication in exposure to malpractice. Although the nature of malpractice claims is complex and multifactorial, the identification and modification of negative physician behaviors may mitigate malpractice risk and ultimately result in the improved quality of patient care.
