She lives on the Space Coast of Florida with her husband, John. Samantha lives with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and has been a wheelchair user since the age of 16. She is a dedicated advocate for the disabled, actively involved with organizations such as the Spina Bifida Association of Central Florida and the Oceans of Hope Foundation. Samantha also served as the director of Hot Wheelz Fitness, a gym tailored for individuals with disabilities.

SATURDAY BILINGUAL STEAM PROGRAM FEATURES LESSON ON HISPANIC ASTRONAUTS--SPOTS STILL AVAILABLE

The American Space Museum“Bilingual STEAM Program” will be this Saturday, Oct. 5th from 10:30 am to Noon, and there are still a few spots open for this free event.

This ASM STEAM program is limited to 30 students, and pre-registration is required through educator Natalia Sepulveda. Please contact her at: Phone: 321-593-3060 Email: [email protected]

Natalia Sepúlveda will conduct the 10:30 am to noon class on the first Saturday of the month, each with a theme. Oct 5th is “Hispanic Astronaut Heritage;” Nov. 2 “Your Space Age Home;” and Dec. 7 “Snoopy Celebrates the Holidays in Space.” The class is free, with pre-registration required, limited to 30 students.

Sepulveda is a bilingual educator, best-selling children’s book author, translator, and editor. She’s a Ronald McNair Fellow (Challenger astronaut) with a master’s degree in Spanish from the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

She owns Bilingual Lifestyle Publishing and teaches Spanish in her Bilingual Playgroup at the Brevard County libraries. She has translated and edited over 450 children’s books and educational resources. She also runs a Bilingual Lifestyle blog, sharing her bilingual family adventures and educational resources.

She will not only teach Space Age concepts, but employ the Spanish language to the vocabulary of the students in her educational materials. You do not need to know Spanish to attend. Students will learn new phrases and terms along with science education.

FACTS ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION International Space Station

Size: The ISS is about the size of a football field, measuring 243 feet long by 361 feet wide.

The space station has been continuously occupied since November 2000. There are 7 Americans and 5 Russians living on the ISS in late September 2024.

279 individuals from 22 countries have visited the International Space Station. The 72nd Expedition crew is about ot take over.

Spacewalks: Astronauts and cosmonauts regularly perform spacewalks to construct, maintain, and upgrade the station.

As of September 11, 2024, there have been 271 spacewalks (times two astronauts each) performed at the International Space Station (ISS) since December 1998. These spacewalks have been conducted using NASA's Extravehicular Mobility Units (EMUs), or spacesuits, and Roscosmos Orlan spacesuits.

Weight: The ISS weighs around 420,000 kilograms (925,000 pounds), which is more than 330 cars.

Orbit: The ISS orbits Earth every 90 minutes at a speed of 17,500 miles per hour.

Living quarters: The ISS has living and working space that's larger than a six-bedroom house, with six sleeping quarters, two bathrooms, a gym, and a 360-degree view bay window.

Construction: The ISS was built over 10 years and more than 30 missions by five space agencies from 15 countries.

Research: The ISS is a unique science laboratory where astronauts and scientists conduct research.

Exercise: Astronauts exercise for at least two hours a day to prevent muscle and bone loss in microgravity.

Internet: ISS residents have laptops and can connect to the internet to stay in touch with family and friends, and watch TV.

History: The first rudimentary space station was created in 1969 by linking two Russian Soyuz vehicles in space.
