10631 West Freistadt Road
Mequon, WI
(ca. 1885)
Like Thiensville, Freistadt, Wisconsin is an area of Ozaukee County categorized as a neighborhood within the limits of Mequon. The area was first settled in 1839 by immigrants who were among the earliest German immigrants to migrate to Wisconsin. Their success at Freistadt encouraged others to do the same and was a contributing factor to the eventual large German population in Mequon. This area, located in the southwest section of Ozaukee County, is rich in history with each property offering a unique story to tell.
The area of Mequon was originally inhabited by Native Americans. By early in the 19th century, this land was populated by the Potawatomi west of the Milwaukee River, and the Menomonee from the Milwaukee River East to Lake Michigan. The River was used as a commerce route for European trappers, explorers and traders traveling through what is now Mequon, and eventually Thiensville.
In 1833, the Potawotami were forced to sell all of their land holdings in southeastern Wisconsin, including the area of Mequon. The expulsion of the Potawotami opened up the land for white settlement. Between 1834 and 1836, a surveyor named Brink and his assistant surveyed the land to establish the town of Mequon. The Menominee sold their area of land in the Treaty of the Cedars in 1836. Settlers came from England (mostly by way of NewYork) around this time, followed by German and Irish immigrants.
In 1839, a group of immigrants from Saxony settled near the Milwaukee River. In the same year, twenty families from Pomerania founded Freistadt, a German name that translates to “free city”, due to their ability to establish religious freedom. The first Lutheran church in Wisconsin was built by these families in 1840.
Friedrich Ferdinand “Frank” Gierach was born on (July 30, 1858- June 11, 1907) was the son of George "Friedrich" and Charlotte Fredericke Bartelt) Gierach. The Gierach family was part of the “first wave” of Freisadt settlers. They were Lutherans from Northern Germany who came to this country for the chance at a new life, along with the opportunity to worship as they choose. Immigrants who made it to Milwaukee were met by speculators who charged high prices for property, forcing immigrants to settle north and west of the city. These large tracts of land helped settlers keep their communities intact where they could continue speaking their own language, carry on the customs of their homeland, and worship as they wished.
Friedrich Gierach built the Cricket's tavern and restaurant building on the south east corner of the intersection of Freistadt Road and Granville Road in 1885. He purchased the land from Charles Schoessow (11805 N. Farmdale Road) who owned 80 acres of land which extended all the way from Granville Road to Farmdale Road. The building was used as a tavern and store as a central gathering place for the community and has had a number owners over the years. The house directly east of Crickets was constructed by Frederick Garrick as his home around the same time, which he owned until 1915.
In 1945, Elroy Jager bought the Crickets building from Elroy Starich. Starich‘s son, Levi, describes the building like this: “The bar was centered off the corner at the intersection. The room to the south had been a grocery store for many years, having its own entrance off the street. Inside, the grocery store and the bar were connected by two doors. When the families came, the men would visit at the bar while the women would shop at the grocery store. When the women wanted to go home they would peek in to the bar from time to time waiting for their man. Some early visitor told me that the building was once the post office (Probably moved from the general store across the street after the postmaster, Carl Schneider, died in 1884). When my father took over the place in 1945 he began serving Friday fish fry and chicken. It was so crowded by customers that he added a room to the east in 1947. People were eating and sitting on the stairs going up to the living quarters. The dining room was added in self-defense.” The Jaegers sold the business to Tom and Sophie Dreshek. The fish fry and meals are still served at Crickets through the run of the business.
Over the years alterations have been made to the building, including expanding the second story (pre-1945), and additional rooms (pre-1945) on the east and south sides on the building to accommodate business. The initial first floor/bar layout has remained relatively unchanged since it’s construction over 130 years ago.
Today, the building is home to Korner-Q’s.
