There are few topics out there that touch such a raw nerve like the topic of “statins”. I probably spend half my day discussing the pros and cons of statin therapy (I spend the other half trying to convince people that controlling cholesterol is even important).
But what really are these compounds, and why do they have such a bad reputation?

🥂 🎂 💥 Happy Birthday to us!! 💥 🎉 🎊 🎉 🎈
Three years ago today Wisconsin Cardiology Associates turned on the lights and our first patient walked through the door. Since then, over 💥4000💥 patients have followed, each looking for a more personal (and personalized) approach to their cardiovascular health journey. Before we opened, we were told that the corporate healthcare systems would never let their patients "leave" their systems.
They never understood that they don't "own" their patients, and that in this day and age, more and more people want a voice in their healthcare choices. 💪
Cheers to 3 years of listening to those voices and offering a choice in the Metro Milwaukee area: High Quality General Cardiology Care that is Effective, Efficient and Transparent!! 🎊 🎉 🎈

Recently, the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology jointly released updated guidelines regarding the management of high blood pressure.
It once again made me think back on the history of blood pressure management in this country, and how far we have come. Did you know that our previously apathetic approach to the management of blood pressure cost this country the life of one of the most influential presidents in history? Can our gut microbiome, the trillions of bacteria living in our intestines, influence blood pressure? The American Heart Association recently published a “Science Advisory”, highlighting advances in gut microbiome and hypertension research that have suggested a novel therapeutic opportunity: targeting the bacteria in our intestines to achieve blood pressure control!

Despite the fact that for every year for >100 years, heart disease has killed more people annually than all cancers combined, it seems more people are afraid of cancer...
When I tell people that changes in their lifestyle can prevent heart disease, they sometimes listen. But if I tell them that the same changes can reduce the risk of cancer, I notice their eyes open a little wider, and their ears perk up a little more.
The good news? Every year it looks more and more convincing that the SAME lifestyle changes that help the heart ALSO help reduce the risk of cancer. Check out our latest blog to learn more!

This is going to be a pretty obvious statement at this point, but we have a crisis of expertise in this country. It has been so easy to amplify your voice in recent years that anyone, regardless of background experience, can say anything, and a lot of people out there will believe it. So when experts recently published the KETO-CTA trial, should we believe that high LDL levels don't lead to worsened coronary plaque? Read our latest blog and find out!

Can we do better than butter? Can something rich make us poor? A recently published study highlighted the impact of small things that are done frequently and how they can add up over the course of a lifetime, kind of like a nutritional version of compound interest.
