On July 22, 2003, a powerful derecho swept across Memphis with little warning, bringing hurricane-force winds that toppled thousands of trees, damaged homes, and knocked out power across much of the city.

The storm became known as ā€œHurricane Elvisā€ because it struck during Elvis Week preparations and delivered destruction similar to what many would expect from a hurricane.

More than 300,000 MLGW customers lost power, some for weeks. Streets were blocked by fallen trees, neighborhoods were left in darkness, and cleanup crews worked around the clock to restore the city.

For many Memphians, Hurricane Elvis remains one of the most memorable weather events in local history.

How long were you without power after Hurricane Elvis?

For decades, the Commercial Appeal building at 495 Union Avenue was where Memphis got its news. Thousands of newspapers rolled off its presses every day, documenting everything from Elvis Presley and the Civil Rights Movement to Tigers basketball and life across the Mid South.

The newspaper’s roots date back to 1839, and for generations the Commercial Appeal was considered Memphis newspaper of record.

Today, the once bustling headquarters stands at the end of its historic run as plans move forward for a new Regional One Health campus on the site.

How many of you remember picking up a copy of The Commercial Appeal every morning?

On August 15, 1987, ABC’s Nightline aired one of the rarest interviews ever conducted with Colonel Tom Parker, the mysterious manager who guided Elvis Presley from a Memphis recording artist to the biggest entertainer in the world.

Parker almost never spoke publicly. But ten years after Elvis’ death, he sat down with Ted Koppel and defended the decisions that shaped Elvis career.

To some, Parker was a marketing genius who created The King. To others, he was the man who kept Elvis from reaching his full potential.

Nearly fifty years after Elvis passing, the debate continues.

In 1992, the eastern edge of Shelby County was in the middle of a retail boom unlike anything the area had seen before.

New stores were opening across Bartlett, Germantown, Cordova, Collierville, and Southeast Memphis. The map shows planned openings for Target, Walmart, Kroger, Piggly Wiggly, MegaMarket, Seessel’s, Phar Mor, and Home Quarters.

At the time, many of these communities were experiencing rapid population growth as families moved eastward from the city. Developers raced to build shopping centers, grocery stores, and big box retailers to keep up with demand.

Some of these stores are still familiar today, while others like Seessel’s, MegaMarket, Phar Mor, and Home Quarters have disappeared into Memphis history.

Do you remember shopping at any of these stores when they first opened?
