SECOND CHANCE SUNDAY

Many people use the terms reading delay and dyslexia interchangeably, but they are not the same thing.

A reading delay describes what we can see – a child who is reading below the level expected for their age. Dyslexia is a specific learning difference that may help explain why those reading difficulties are happening.

Understanding the difference matters because the right support starts with the right understanding. While some children with reading delays may catch up with targeted intervention, children with dyslexia often need more specialised and structured support.

In this visual, I’ve broken down some of the key differences between reading delay and dyslexia in a simple, easy-to-understand format for parents, educators, and professionals.

See the visual for our Bitesize Guide to Dyslexia download instructions.

📚✨ Did you know? Reading picture books with your child does more than create special memories—it helps build a stronger vocabulary!

Research shows that picture books are 2–3 times more likely to include words that are not among the 5,000 most common words in English. That means children are exposed to richer, more diverse language through books than they often hear in everyday conversation.

The more children hear and understand new words, the stronger their reading comprehension, communication skills, and confidence become! 💡❤️

At Remarkable Readers, we believe every story is an opportunity to grow. So grab a book, snuggle up, and explore new words together—one page at a time! 📖🌟

What is your child’s favorite picture book right now? Share it in the comments! ⬇️
