How do I know when it’s time to replace my prosthesis?
The main things we take into consideration when discussing replacements, are fit, color, hygiene and changes in medical necessity. As silicone ages it tends to yellow. Silicone also absorbs the oils from your skin, which after years of wear can make it unhygienic. The fit can change due to anatomical changes from aging, weight fluctuation, etc. This patient has received several prostheses over the last decade. You can see how the color and fit has changed over the years.

Enjoying the sunshine today! Take a look at this partial auricular prosthesis

Many of our patients ask us which type of prostheses are made in the clinic most often. Ears and noses are by far the most prevalent! Why might this be the case? We have found that our auricular patients have an extremely wide range of diagnoses (congenital, trauma, cancer, etc.), while our nasal patients are largely linked to cancers (mainly skin cancer).
Why do you think these are the most common in our practice?

Another amazing conference from the IAA! Allison and Ashley had the opportunity to display a poster outlining their hard work with Ophélie Puisségur. Big thank you to the Walter Spohn Trust for awarding us a grant that has allowed this project to proceed! Looking forward to next year’s conference 👁️👃🏻👂🏻

We are so excited about speaking at UT Southwestern Medical Center! Allison will get to share more about the patients that we work with and what our services do for them, as well as how Anaplastologists and physicians can collaborate on patient care.

What a difference 8 years can make! This patient’s microtic lobe had a vertical measurement increase of 10mm. That’s a 25% difference between the first cast and the second! 😱 The unaffected ear had a vertical measurement increase of 8.63mm which was a 14.9% increase from the original cast. This is why it is important to continually evaluate the fit and scale of the restoration throughout childhood and into adolescence.
