With fall upon us and winter right around the corner, I know lots of people are worried about cold and flu season. Well, not only can a massage make you feel great when you’re healthy, it can help keep you healthy too! People who received a 45-minute massage had an increased number of lymphocytes, which are white blood cells that play a large role in defending the body from disease. The massage brought other physical changes, too. Afterwards, participants had lower levels of cytokines, which are molecules that play a role in inflammation. So if you want to head off illness this season, book a massage today! Call Alyssa at 815-528-2318 and ask about our Fall Special!
A recent review of more than a dozen massage studies conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine concludes that massage therapy relieves depression and anxiety by affecting the body's biochemistry. In a series of studies including about 500 men, women, and children with depression or stress problems, researchers measured the stress hormone cortisol in participants before and immediately after massage and found that the therapy lowered levels by up to 53%. (Cortisol can drive up blood pressure and blood sugar levels and suppress the immune system.) Massage also increased serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters that help reduce depression.
Experts estimate that 80 percent to 90 percent of disease is stress-related. Massage and bodywork is there to combat that frightening number by helping us remember what it means to relax. The physical changes massage brings to your body can have a positive effect in many areas of your life. Besides increasing relaxation and decreasing anxiety, massage lowers your blood pressure, increases circulation, improves recovery from injury, helps you to sleep better and can increase your concentration. It reduces fatigue and gives you more energy to handle stressful situations.
Getting regular massages helps to increase relaxation, which can help to calm anxiety and improve sleep problems. In fact, some studies have shown that the brain boosts the production of endorphins, chemicals that regulate the activity of a group of nerve cells in the brain that relax muscles, dull pain, and reduce panic and anxiety. Massage therapy may also trigger serotonin, a brain chemical that generates calm and serene feelings. It makes sense that when stress is alleviated, peaceful sleep comes.
There is some science behind the idea of a healing touch. Studies done at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and at the Group Health Research Institute in Seattle found that a 45-minute massage brought on a major spike in lymphocytes, white blood cells that fight bacteria and viruses. It also decreased substances that cause inflammation and trigger allergies and asthma, and it lessened the production of a hormone that is linked with increasing stress levels.
Adolescents with ADHD rated themselves as happier and were observed to fidget less after massage sessions. Also, teachers rated adolescents receiving massage as less hyperactive and as spending more time on-task. Children with ADHD showed more on-task behavior in the classroom and were rated as less hyperactive by their teachers following one month of twice weekly massages.
Perhaps the most significant figure in the development of Western massage was Per Henrik Ling, a Swedish researcher who first became interested in massage when he was able to heal the gout in his own elbow by using massage techniques that imitated the positions of Swedish gymnastics. And maybe that’s why you never see a Swedish gymnast with gout!
I hope you’re all enjoying the Olympics. Don’t forget about the Summer Special: A sixty-minute massage for $40!
About Us
Some people have been asking, so for those of you who were wondering, here's my website: www.aimassage.massageplanet.com
Massage Therapist: Would you like some Tiger Balm down your spine?
Client: No. You shouldn't use that! It's not ecologically sound! It's made with real tigers!
Massage Therapist: Ma'am I can assure you that Tiger Balm is not that expensive. I've looked at the ingredients and I'm sure it does not contain any tiger residue whatsoever.
Client: Oh. Okay.
Massage Therapist: The baby powder however, contains 96% actual babies. :)
Athletes in Ancient Greece used massage therapy to loosen joints and increase circulation. Massage is still used today by serious athletes and was even used in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. In fact, one of my instructors was one of the massage therapists there!
Happy Independence Day, everybody! Stay safe.... and cool!
