IRS is short staffed, but our clients are still getting refunds!!!

"Short Staffed. Tax filing season is due to start Monday. The agency called 26,000 staffers back to work without pay. However, as of Tuesday, less than half (12,000) actually reported to work. About 5,000 workers claimed hardships exemptions allowed under their labor contracts and another 9,000 could not be reached by the agency.

As a result, the agency will be operating with an even more skeletal crew than originally expected. According to the agency’s revised Jan. 15 shutdown plan, it expected to have 40,052 (57 percent of its total workforce) working during filing season, despite the shutdown. It is unclear whether the agency will be able to meet this goal. Prior to calling several employees back, only 12.5 % of its workforce was operational.

The lack of staff translates to poor service and long wait times. This year, the IRS is only answering 1/3 of its calls, with average wait times between 25 and 40 minutes."
