Why I like the Helios 40-2 Russian made lens.

I am thrilled with the experience of life and do my best to express that experience with a camera. What makes a photograph great? How are photographers inspired?

Is photography really art? There is no simple answer to these questions. I suppose the answers are as varied as the images and the photographers themselves. Here you will find honesty, comedy and tragedy and hopefully as we journey along together we all may learn something.

I’d heard that Nikon had made an awesome lens in the 90’s. The 135mm and 105mm dc were among Nikons best portrait lens. I bought the 135 f2.0 dc and absolutely loved it! I knew I had to have the 105mm as well. It arrived today! Although both lenses were bought used they were like new, one coming from Japan the other from Florida. There’s a trick to buying on eBay that I’ll be covering in my videos so be sure to watch.
Anyway, this is only my first attempt with the (new) 105mm. Like the 135mm I was impressed with all aspects of the lens.

This is Gordon (his brother is Flash). His protection is to disappear, being black it makes the task easier- but those eyes give him away.

A couple of Tom’s trying to impress a lady. It’s that time of year again, she was playing coy and seemed uninterested. I would have preferred using my 200-500 lens but the best I could do was Tamron 70-200 on a crop sensor camera. Had to crop it a lot, not the best but it’ll do for now. Next time I’ll have the right tool for the job!

I always try to get it right in camera. Reworked this one. Cropped it and went with b/w. It works!

Back Story.
This is a lookout point overlooking the Columbia River. It’s west of Spokane Wa. I loved to stop here for the night when I ran the Pacific Northwest. Location is known as “Wild Horse Lookout”
More info here. Quite a place!

My truck! Years ago a friends wife after looking at my photo’s hanging in my home asked me. “What are you doing driving a truck?” I think I was flattered. Truth is I like it. I have my wife with me, I don’t depend on photography sales and I don’t compete in the portrait/wedding game any more. As a photographer I’m always looking for new and interesting places - they pay me to do it. The people I work with are among the best in the industry. It’s honest work and after 28 years I’m pretty good at it. I suppose I’ll continue as long as I can....

This is a great image, that few people like. Why? It reminds us of the inconvenient truth. Although zoo’s are fun places to go we forget they are a business enterprise that exploit the inhabitants. This image pains me every time I see it. A successful image should make you think, ponder on its meaning and elicit an emotion. I love this and hate it at the same time.

You have a gift. Yes you, something you can be passionate about. It may be painting, knitting, cooking or like me photography. Imagine if all of us were to seek out that God given gift and jump in with both feet. Aspire for greatness for no one but you. Life will take on new meaning, you won’t be caught up in the minutia that is life. Photography for me has drawn me close to the Creator since I’m certain He is responsible for it all. I give Him all the credit. What an awesome muse!

It’s at the lab now! Printed on metal, I wanted to go with something modern. It’ll be 16x24 and ready to hang. If the quality checks out I’ll be offering it as a limited edition complete with registered number (registered to original purchaser). It’ll be a small edition, 50 S/N and two artist proof. This process is designed to be special, those that see it WILL be impressed! Price to be determined but due to production costs it won’t be cheap but it will be reasonable. Those that are interested should let me know ASAP. More to follow...

Ok, so here’s the deal with the editions series. The only photography work I’ll be doing is creating images for home or office presentation.
I’ve not offered limited edition prints in 30 years but now I’m back. The last show I had I sold all but three of the original series and was very pleased. Modern equipment and printing offerings allow me to take full advantage of higher resolution pictures. Stay tuned for more...

It still blows my mind that I can fly a Hasselblad lens 400’ in the air and make 20mp images.

I had a little time today so I thought I’d test my new Tamron 70-20m 2.8 G2 lens. The ice fog is rolling in and it’s going to bitter cold for the next few days. I could have cropped this tighter, decided not to, I like the surrounding background. Also I want it to look somewhat unique.

Sandhill Crane. These birds found in Duncan Az (a small hole in the wall place in south eastern Arizona). Caught my attention, there were thousands of them! Turns out they were migrating and the area is famous for migrating birds. Click the link to learn more about Duncan and the migrating birds.

I like quality and I don’t mind paying for it. After some research I decided on the Tamron 10-24mm lens. I’m new to ultra wide angle luckily it’s a small learning curve. This is a first attempt, I like it. This lens coupled with theNikon D500 work very well together.
