PSA-What is a "Surety Bond"? The first picture is a customer's deck that another contractor started six months ago before he just ran off completely. We had to tear out the "new" decking, fix the frame, fix the footings, install new decking, rails, and stairs. The customer had to pay for their deck twice. Worse, the old contractor never paid the supplier. This contractor is licensed and insured but none of that helps in this case. To protect yourself from this type of issue make sure your contractor has a bond. A surety bond is an insurance policy that protects you from bad business practices. If they leave the job undone, if their work is faulty and dangerous, if you have to hire someone else to fix or complete the work. Always get a copy of your contractor's license, insurance, and their bond before signing a contract.
