About the Altar: “The heavenly butterfly garden” pays homage to my younger sister that died in a tragedy that killed 273 people. To me, she transcended, like an Angel in the shape of a butterfly , flying across fields of flowers, welcomed by the Virgin Mary.

Featured Altar of the Day from the 2021 Virtual Community Altar Project :

Made by Beatriz Aguilar for her father Dr. Miguel Aguilar-Casas

Title of piece: Dr. Miguel

About the Altar: With this altar I honor my father, who died 2 days after the lock down started, and therefore I was unable to travel to Mexico to say goodbye or attend his funeral. I have represented everything that he loved: He was a orthopedist surgeon in pediatrics. The colorful skeleton is him, checking the pulse of a child skeleton with his stethoscope. On his heart is an elegant skeleton that represents my mom, who is still alive and who he called beautiful up to his last moment. On his stomach is the image of a good stake, and a glass of milk with sweet bread called "co**ha", his favorite food. On his chest is the shield of his alma mater (national Autonomous University of Mexico) and his favorite camera, and the Dallas Cowboys shield, his favorite football team. And below the kid and in front of him is a skeleton mariachi, because he loved music, specially Mexican folk music. At the top and front of the box there are two poems written by my mom, what we call Calaveritas, poems referring to the deceased loved one when they encounter "the Death."
