Lights Out Wisconsin works to reduce light pollution and help bird migration MADISON (WKOW)— Lights Out Wisconsin is working with communities to reduce light pollution, which can draw birds toward buildings and increase the risk of deadly window collisions.
DID YOU KNOW? A statewide Lights Out Alert has been issued for tonight (5/11) because over 16 million birds are predicted to fly over Wisconsin!🐦
The goal is to encourage people to turn off non-essential outdoor lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. tonight and throughout the bird migration season ending in mid-June.
Appleton, La Crosse, Madison and Milwaukee are among 216 cities nationwide that can receive these alerts. Lights Out Alerts are forecasted by scientists from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Purdue University.
I recently spoke with Brenna Marsicek about Lights Out Wisconsin, a collaboration of efforts to reduce light pollution and help birds during migration season. Tune in to Wake Up Wisconsin tomorrow morning to hear more about the Lights Out Wisconsin campaign and why Lights Out Alerts are important!
