Jennifer Chiaverini's newest book, THE PATCHWORK PLAYERS, comes out today from William Morrow!
The cast of a smash TV show arrives at a quilter’s retreat for a week of camaraderie and creativity that takes some surprising twists in this heartwarming new installment of Jennifer Chiaverini’s much-beloved Elm Creek Quilts series.
“Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the first novel in her extensive Elm Creek Quilts series, Chiaverini’s latest installment is rich with detail...telling the tale of a particular woman’s motivation to design and craft a particular quilt. Whether inspired by love or grief, the resulting artwork is described with astonishing attention to design, workmanship, and symbolism. Chiaverini also explores how the practice of her craft transforms each woman’s emotional life, each stitch bringing her closer to a sense of peace… A warm portrait of women bound by craft—perfect for fireside reading.” -Kirkus Reviews

I found this article on "the reading crisis" compelling and concerning. In a speech at the London Book Fair, Joanna Prior, CEO of Pan Macmillan, attributed the decline in reading to "a 'neurological shift' caused by children being raised on short-form algorithms 'designed to dismantle the capacity for sustained attention.' A generation has been 'rewired for the scroll over the page,' and with that loss of literacy and inability to pay attention, Prior asserted, 'critical thinking is the first casualty.'"
I've heard other reports of how students are no longer reading entire novels in some English lit classes in the US, but merely excerpts instead. As a novelist but also as a reader—and as someone who understands that sustained concentration is important to cognitive development—this troubles me deeply. What are your thoughts?
