We’re proud to highlight the students and emerging scholars whose research is helping shape the future of the nonprofit sector.

This week, we’re spotlighting Jonathan Meagher-Zayas, an educator, consultant, researcher, and doctoral student at the University at Buffalo, SUNY.

Jonathan’s research explores how nonprofit leadership education can be decolonized through transformative learning theory and participatory design research. Drawing on his background in social work, public administration, and nonprofit management, his work considers how we can better prepare the next generation of nonprofit leaders.

Through research like Jonathan’s, ARNOVA scholars are asking important questions about how we teach, learn, and lead across the nonprofit sector.

🎓 Meet an ARNOVA Scholar

We’re proud to highlight the work of early-career scholars and PhD students who are shaping the future of nonprofit and philanthropic research.

This month, we’re spotlighting Margaret Dansu, an early-career scholar at Tohoku University in Japan whose research explores how marginalized individuals use online communities and peer support groups to cope, construct identity, and find belonging.

Drawing on qualitative methods, Margaret examines digitally mediated identity work, everyday solidarity, and the role nonprofit-facilitated spaces can play in shaping social participation. Her work also considers how online and offline interactions intersect across different cultural contexts.

Through research like Margaret’s, ARNOVA scholars are expanding our understanding of the many ways nonprofit and voluntary spaces shape connection, community, and belonging.

📚 Applications are now open for the ARNOVA Teaching Enhancement Fund!

The ARNOVA Teaching Section is offering two opportunities designed to support and strengthen teaching in nonprofit and voluntary action education:

🔹 Research Grant Award — $1,500
Supports research on teaching that contributes to nonprofit education and higher education more broadly.

🔹 Educational Stipend for Faculty — $750
Supports eligible faculty seeking to attend a conference or educational program that will enhance their teaching.

📅 Application deadline: September 30, 2026

Applicants must be current ARNOVA members in good standing. Applications for both awards may be submitted directly to Amml Hussein at [email protected].
