We all make mistakes in life. I made the mistake of becoming certified as an enneagram coach and using the enneagram in my coaching, guiding others to 'know themselves on a deeper level' and 'grow to a higher understanding of self'.

Knowing yourself is knowing you are a child of God, our Lord Jesus Christ. Understanding ourselves comes from belief in Christ followed by confession, repentance and forgiveness.

I have fought to get straight answers on how the enneagram was developed and below are the facts. I encourage you to explore the roots of this tool if you are conflicted about using it in your life.

I apologize for using and teaching this tool.

HISTORY OF THE ENNEAGRAM
Melissa Doherty
• Ennea=9
• Grama-Something written
Real history:
• The symbol originated in the late 1800’s by Gurdjieff. A diagram of cosmic reality. New age people describe it like this--A mystical, metaphysical tool. How the points connect are the non-apparent relationships that require a deeper engagement to be part of. Requires intention and focus and energy. No process occurs in a linear fashion.

Who was Gurdjieff?
o An esoteric spiritual seeker looking into secretive religions.
o Developed the 9-point diagram called the Enneagon, a diagram of cosmic reality.
o Thought this could illustrate mathematical and spiritual laws.
o Came up with the law of 3 and the law of 7. Had nothing to do with personality.
o Was raised orthodox but turned away and into esoteric teachings.
o All of reality could be summed up here.
o Died in 1949

His follower P.D. Ouspenski
o Wrote about the enneagon as a spiritual diagram and added the 3 areas of man (mind, heart and body).
o Writings were published by his wife after his death. Next came Oscar Ichazo.

Ichazo
o Founded a school called Arica (still around) in Chile.
o Was an occult teacher.
o Secret teachings in his school.
o Originally said it was given from a historical source
o Claimed later he was given the origins of ego fixations from a higher source, 2 spirits; Metatron and Green Q’tub
o Our essence is covered up by our false self our ego and how we have been conditioned.
o Naranjo was one of his students
o Died in 2020

Naranjo
o Chilean psychiatrist
o Claimed the enneagram was ancient. Not ancient at all.
o Naranjo said HE came up with the 9 personality types based on observations and mostly from automatic writing. 3:50 in this video: https://youtu.be/wlO3KJWnNd8
o He went to Esalen a think tank for new age and psychological experimental therapies.
o Bob Ox, a Jesuit, came to Esalen, learned from Naranjo and brought them to the Catholic church.
 At this time was both in the new age and the catholic church.
 Never endorsed by the Catholic church
o Died in 2019

Richard Rohr
o Taught it so people can get in touch with their true selves.
o A tool to find your inner divinity.
o Catholic priest who is in line with new age beliefs.

Suzanne Stabile learned about it from Richard Rohr

Ian Cron learned about it from Richard Rohr

Chris Huertz learned from Richard Rohr.
o Includes learning it from Helen Palmer as well.
o Not based on psychological studies. Came out of the new age. Easy to identify with something else—astrology, birth chart, etc.. We want to latch onto things that are self-absorbed.
o When he published The Sacred Enneagram, it gave the enneagram another push in the church.

Helen Palmer (a former psychic) implemented the enneagram with her new age philosophies.

The Road Back to You in 2016 by Stabile and Cron gave a stamp of approval for the enneagram. THIS is when the explosion of the Enneagram happened in the church.

Drumroll please…… My home is filled with head types. Yes, even the dog. Pretty confident about this post.

However, please comment below your Enneagram type and what traits halt growth for you.

I‘ll start. See ⬇️

Being the expert, go-to, find a solution person is admirable and exhausting all at the same time. So much so, 5’s will disappear for days to regroup and recharge.

Their brains are constantly moving. And, although it invigorates them, it can also scatter and deplete their energy. Type 5’s are good limit setters, almost too good. They sometimes come off as abrasive because of their directness. I believe it’s because they are good at separating feeling from communicating and as a result their delivery is pragmatic.

Enneagram 5’s are deeply feeling individuals who use knowledge as a shield for their heart. 🧐♥️

So…growth is hard. I wish it wasn’t but it we are honest with ourselves, true growth ONLY happens within the presence of pain.

Yes, the Enneagram can be insightful and positive and funny. However, if we really want to grow to our highest level of potential, live the path we were meant to live, we do have to look at our shadow side, our energy, the things we know about ourselves that we falsely believe others don’t know.

It is in that time of hurting and anger we all have a decision to make.

Are we going to be a victim or a survivor? It’s okay to hang out in either camp for awhile but to make long lasting positive changes that impact all areas of health, we must be survivors. And that means, looking at all of who we are.

Enneagram 4’s ROCK THIS, will you?

I have a lot of type 3’s in my life. All of us have at least one Enneagram type we tend to gravitate towards. In my experience, it has more to do with level of health within your type than your Enneagram type itself.

What I love about type 3’s! ♥️
1. They are witty and smart
2. Humor is mandatory
3. They make success look easy
4. They say a lot with just a few words
5. They are dynamic, intuitive, and hard working

Downside of the things I love about type 3’s
1. They burn out because they take on so much
2. Self care takes a back seat in order to hit the goal
3. Seeing another way or side is difficult because they put so much energy into why they believe what they believe
4. Vulnerability is scary
5. Asking for help is hard

My challenge to any type 3 is to comment on this post with a single word that describes your type.

“You’re just so nice,” she said with a look of disgust. I sat across from a friend of mine, at the time, who was giving me professional feedback. I was confused and a little irritated however she was right!

The “nice” she was talking about was disingenuous and nonverbally begged for a response of inclusion and love. —
Just one pivotal moment that hit me when I learned my Enneagram type.

Tell us a phrase that factored into you understanding your type in the comments below.

𝕋𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕜 𝕪𝕠𝕦!!

1000k followers may not seem like a big deal to some however it’s a big deal to me. My goal with Fit Enneagram was to create a fun, educational, health related Enneagram community to help each of us grow through every season. I began this account with huge ideas and dreams that are starting to unfold.

Growing an authentic account from scratch takes a tremendous amount of work. There are no shortcuts and it is incredibly difficult to predict what will and won’t work. Social media is a big, intimidating world with so much potential and possibility.

I did not anticipate the amount of education, support, and really wonderful new relationships that have occurred as a result of this community.

As a THANK YOU, I am offering one free 90 minute typing session to the lucky winner of the following drawing. To participate, comment below your Enneagram type and what you love about being that type. I will randomly select a winner this Friday!

If you aren’t sure what I do, here’s a little bit about me.

Hallie uses her experience as a marriage and family therapist to educate, support and challenge clients to achieve optimal health by aligning thoughts, behaviors and actions with their goals and dreams. Positives that can halt growth for each Enneagram type featuring…𝕋𝕐ℙ𝔼 𝟙!

Positive traits that can keep Enneagram 9’s stuck.

When I first learned the Enneagram, I couldn’t think of a single type 9 friend until I remembered…

The friend who drove us to North Carolina, listening to me talk, making me laugh, and driving with a very heavy lead foot. 😳

The friend who, like me as a 2, would apologize for not getting back to me yet had some HUGE things happening in her life that, “were no big deal.” 🤷‍♀️

Or, the friend who was involved in everything, always engaged for the good of the group yet looked nothing like a 9.

And the young man who was my son’s best friend who inspired him to let go and truly be in the present. 🫂

This post is for all the rad PEACEMAKER’S out there.
