UMM rescinds offer to controversial men's soccer coach

The University of Maine at Machias announced today it has rescinded an offer of employment to Coach Kevin Mahlan, formerly of Carl Sandburg College. Mahlan previously received an offer to come to UMM to take over as men's soccer coach.

Coach Mahlan's stepped down as Men's Soccer Coach at Carl Sandburg College after complaints of racial insensitivity.

UMM's statement is below:

As we have become aware of Coach Mahlan's circumstances at Carl Sandburg College, it has become clear that it is going to be difficult for him or the program to be successful at UMM. Therefore, we have made the decision to rescind the offer.
In this week's issue:

Jonesport's largest employer announced its closure last week and Nancy Beal have all the coverage, Washington County's Teacher of the Year advances to state semifinals, Charles Lightner reviews Sarah Graves' latest book, and Valdine Atwood takes us through all six of the O'Briens in her column "Downeast Yesterdays."

All that, and two pages of pictures from the most successful Margaretta Days to date.
