It isn't every day you meet a famous Maine author who has introduced the Maine outdoors to over 10,000 school kids in Northern New England over thr past decade. But yesterday morning I had the chance to do just that as noted outdoorsman and retired Allagash Park Ranger Tim Caverly and wife Susan asked me to join them for an early lunch at Helen's Restaurant of Machias and a stop at Maine Veterans' Homes - Machias where Tim dropped off several if his books about the Northern Maine Woods for thr residents to enjoy!

Tim, who is staying the area for the weekend may pop up in Lubec for the Pirate Invasion this morning for an impromptu book signing, so if you see him say hello, and grab one of his books!

And special thanks to Representative Thomas Skolfield for the initial intro several years ago. Both Tim and Tom have given so much to our state during their 40+ years in parks...

We had a great time last Sunday down in Manchester at the Kennebec Cabin Company for the Maine Cabin Masters live podcast and fan festival.

We met some wonderful folks. Yes, it WAS fine to bring your previously purchased copies of my book to the event for signing. This is always a conundrum for some people, but we did sign a bunch of books for the folks who mustered up the courage to bring their own. Yup, I sold a bunch too. Some bought a copy to be signed because they didn't bring their own. I still appreciate the sale.

Any time that I am signing books, please feel free to bring your copies. It would be silly to think that I wouldn't sign a book that you already have. These are tough times and books are expensive. I know this. Feel free to tap me on a shoulder at a restaurant, or if you catch me on the way into the auto parts store for a quart of oil. Seriously, this ain't fame and fortune; it's friendship.

I met Carole and Carol at Helen's Restaurant of Machias, Maine this past weekend. They are Houston transplants who found our jagged edge of America to be to their liking. We had a nice chat and my eggs didn't even get cold. Thanks, ladies.

Jennifer stopped by the table in Manchester, Maine on Sunday, we had our photo taken but she didn't send it. However, Jennifer did send me the pictures that she took when she bought the book last summer.

Remember when we all couldn't see each other? We had hundreds and hundreds of photos of my book at different locations around the world. Pakistan was and interesting location, but all the others were fantastic. I saved them all. Thank you.

Jennifer didn't find her photos worthy of sending, but I talked her into sending them this week. I also signed her previously purchased copy of TDITD

There is a theme to Jennifer's photos; I think she enjoys using straws.

My family used to yearly drive to Waldoboro to visit elderly relatives, and Helen's restaurant was an integral part of our itinerary. We first found it when a motel where we stopped for the night recommended Helen's, telling my dad to drive into Machias and look for the line out the door! That , of course, was in the days when Helen's was just a storefront downtown, but it still holds a fond place in my memories.

It is our pleasure to offer you fresh local ingredients purchased from local farmers, fishermen, and And no one who had one could ever forget those pies!

Our Story
Established 1950

Helen's Restaurant opened for business on Main Street, Machias in 1950. Helen and Larry Mugnai along with Larry's brother Julie and sister Esther ran the restaurant, building the reputation of great homemade food. In 1976 a customer who often teased Larry about selling Helen's was surprised one day when Larry said he was ready to sell. Bob and Joan Carter purchased Hele

n's with Larry staying on board to help during the transition. With crowds waiting up the street for a seat and poor parking on Main Street, the Carters decided to move Helen's to its present location in 1983. The Carters built the Machias Motor Inn next door in 1988 and sold the restaurant to Joan's sister Judy and husband Gary Hanscom. With encouragement and help from Mugnai the Hanscoms opened Helen's of Ellsworth in 1994. Larry Mugnai then retired from Helen's after 44 years. Judy and Gary sold the Ellsworth location and decided to retire selling to son David and his wife Julie in 2008. We (David and Julie) first worked for the Carters on Main Street at the original Helen's location in 1981 and then to the present site before marrying and moving to the Netherlands in 1986 with the Air Force. Working alongside Judy, Gary, Joan, Bobby, Larry, Julie, and Esther (and all the other great Helen's workers) are treasured memories. Upon our return to Machias, Julie went back to Helen's as a waitress and private caterer and David as Helen's manager. In 2005 we purchased the Schoppee Dairy and opened The Inn at Schoppee Farm. July 11, 2014 Helen's was destroyed by a devistating fire. Plans moved quickly for a rebuild on the site. The community support for us and our Helen's family was a complete shock and very humbling. After breaking ground the end of October we will reopen the end of May with the majority of our staff returning. Buying great fresh seasonal food from local farmers (organic when possible) is an ongoing mission we are committed to. This mission has influenced the way we run Helen's. We compost all of our food waste; recycle our plastic, aluminum, and cardboard. Most cleaning products are plant-based, we use recycled paper products, and all Styrofoam has been eliminated. Great food is absolutely what we are all about; we LOVE food and are constantly searching and improving our menu as well as preserving the Helen's classics. We hope you enjoy the changes and your Helen's experience. We strive to continue Helen's reputation of serving outstanding fresh local food at an affordable price with great service. Our Story

Established 1950

Helen's Restaurant opened for business on Main Street, Machias in 1950. Helen and Larry Mugnai along with Larry's brother Julie and sister Esther ran the restaurant, building the reputation of great homemade food. And no one who had one could ever forget those pies!

In 1976 a customer who often teased Larry about selling Helen's was surprised one day when Larry said he was ready to sell. Bob and Joan Carter purchased Helen's with Larry staying on board to help during the transition. With crowds waiting up the street for a seat and poor parking on Main Street, the Carters decided to move Helen's to its present location in 1983. The Carters built the Machias Motor Inn next door in 1988 and sold the restaurant to Joan's sister Judy and husband Gary Hanscom.

With encouragement and help from Mugnai the Hanscoms opened Helen's of Ellsworth in 1994. Larry Mugnai then retired from Helen's after 44 years at the age of 86. Judy and Gary sold the Ellsworth location and decided to retire selling the original Machias location to son David and his wife Julie in 2008.

We (David and Julie) first worked for the Carters on Main Street at the original Helen's location in 1981 and then to the present site before marrying and moving to the Netherlands in 1986 with the Air Force for four years. Working alongside Judy, Gary, Joan, Bobby, Larry, Julie, and Esther (and all the other great Helen's workers) are treasured memories and invaluable restaurant training. Upon our return to Machias, Julie went back to Helen's as a waitress and private caterer and David as Helen's manager. In 2005 we purchased the Schoppee Dairy and opened The Inn at Schoppee Farm, stepping away from Helen’s until 2008 when we purchased Helen’s.

Adding to this storied past is the tragic fire that destroyed the Helen’s building in the early hours of July 11, 2014. Helen’s is clearly more than a building but a delicious food experience while visiting our beautiful coastal Maine town. The amazing love and support to the entire Helen’s family from our home town and away has been incredibly humbling. Helen’s has become many things to many people and that has been very publicly evident during the rebuilding months. Plans moved quickly for a rebuild on the site. After breaking ground the end of October we reopened the end of May 2015 with the majority of our staff returning. Our new space offers sweeping views of the bay from almost every seat. While it is not our old familiar space it is a wonderfully open new clean environment that is much more functional allowing us to better serve you.

Buying great fresh seasonal food from local farmers (organic when possible) is an ongoing mission we are committed to. This mission has influenced the way we run Helen's. We compost all of our food waste; recycle cardboard. Most cleaning products are plant-based, we use recycled paper products, and all Styrofoam has been eliminated. Great food is absolutely what we are all about; we LOVE food and are constantly searching and improving our menu as well as preserving the Helen's classics. We hope you enjoy the changes and your Helen's experience. We strive to continue Helen's reputation of serving outstanding fresh local food, fresh baked rolls, biscuits, bread, donuts, pies and more at an affordable price with great service.
