Yesterday, I had the great privilege of walking the halls of Leinster House again. This is the seat of the Irish Parliament or better known as the Houses of the Oireachtas. The Lower House of Parliament is Dáil Éireann, where I worked from January to April 2007 for Michael D Higgins, when he was a Member of Parliament. Higgins currently serves as the President of Ireland.

Thank you to Senator Mark Daly, Chairman of the Irish Senate, for your hospitality toward the New Jersey Senate and Assembly Delegation by offering a great tour, lunch, and a few pints at the Visitors Bar located in Parliament.

Yesterday, the New Jersey Senate and Assembly Delegation held a briefing with the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs. We discussed maintaining a strong relationship between Ireland and the United States. New Jersey-based businesses account for over 65,000 jobs in Ireland, and we aim to bring more Irish Businesses to New Jersey to grow and prosper.

Later in the afternoon, we had a meeting with the American Ambassador to Ireland, Claire Cronin, where we discussed the priority of our delegation to attract Irish companies to the United States and particularly New Jersey, which would greatly benefit our constituents.

The least we could do is show interest as a governing body in periodically investigating an issue that might have the single-greatest impact on property taxpayers, students and teachers.

March’s Senior Student Spotlight winner is Lydia Palmer, a standout student at Cherokee High School. Lydia is a prime example of what it means to be a student-athlete. As a student, she excels in the classroom. Her academic schedule each year contains honors and AP courses. Outside of the classroom, Lydia was recently recognized for the third consecutive year as a Scholastic All American by USA Swimming. Accolades as a premier swimmer are nothing new to Lydia. She holds multiple school records at Cherokee in the pool and took first place in the 100 and 200 meter breaststroke at the Middle Atlantic Senior Championship this past summer.

Today the Assembly was in session to vote on several bills, including a unanimous vote in favor of legislation co-sponsored by myself and Assemblyman Mike Torrissi Jr to protect family farms and other local farmers in the 8th District from the crippling legal and attorney fees often brought on by frivolous lawsuits.

Farmers play a huge role in the 8th Legislative District’s economy. I’ve introduced four bills to advocate for farmers and ensure farming remains a viable way of life in New Jersey.

Umba, Torrissi bill expands authorized representatives at Department of Labor – NJ Assembly Republicans

Every session, Trenton imposes hundreds of new rules and regulations on our business community. While many large corporations have lawyers and councils that can help them safely navigate these new standards, many small businesses are trying their best to comply and need the help of the state government to guide them.

Senate unanimously passes Scutari resolution demanding governor address unemployment backlog - New Jersey Globe

It's been two years since the beginning of Covid-19, yet Governor Murphy has done nothing to address the unemployment backlog. My office still gets dozens of calls a day asking for unemployment help because they can't get anyone at the Department of Labor to help. People are losing everything waiting for their cases to be resolved. State workers need to return to offices. It's long past due to put an end to these pandemic-era measures.

Boundaries of State’s 8th and 9th Legislative Districts to Change Beginning with 2023 Election Cycle After Redistricting Concludes

I applaud the redistricting commission on achieving the first compromise redistricting map in the state’s history. It was a great show of bipartisanship and democracy. Hopefully, it continues to resonate in the halls of Trenton. I’ll continue to represent every municipality in my district to the best of my ability and am excited to welcome in new towns when the time comes.

I want to feature Khloe Lubin from Burlington County Institute of Technology as my pick for February’s High School Senior Spotlight.

Khloe’s peers, teachers, and administrative staff describe her as compassionate, kind, and empathetic. She is a straight-A student in BCIT’s rigorous Sports Medicine program and is a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, and the National Technical Honor Society. Her tenacity and strength of character are cornerstones for achieving whatever she sets her mind to, and it is no coincidence Khloe ascended to the top of her class.
