Two views: I consider myself an active noticer…spending time seeing things. Intentionally positioning myself for observation. And I can’t help but record it.

In this case, looking for green, a color that makes for peaceful refreshment. I started by noticing visually, then other ways: the rustle of leaves, the smell of nature, the prickle of grass.

Noticing it all and hopeful it would bring with it the promised peace needed for the moment.

Well hello there, Sir. I am curious about you, too. You intrigue me with your plumes of green and blue, your lovely shimmer and your confident spirit.

Thank you for infusing my morning with some courage, some curiosity, and even some healthy skepticism. It gave me a new strut. And thank you for that, too.

Why not take a selfie when you see great street art? Sometimes you just need to remind yourself that beauty exists, and you wanna record it. Even more, experiencing it makes you a part of it, too. This sort of feels like how I feel right now: trying to decide how to be more creative in my life, to be more intentional about beauty…. To record it and be more intentional about the ways that I create and curate that which exhibits His creativity given to us all. It’s a journey I’ll be on for a long time, but today the outlook is colorful.

I know how lucky I am to get to do meaningful work every day. But one of the things I forgot to do was do the meaningful work of my life outside of this building. This is Drane hall. A place where I do meaningful student work at Texas Tech five days a week and sometimes more because I’m often in my head. I love my students and I care so deeply for the work that they are doing. Our team is strong and it’s a lot of fun.

Over a year ago I set out to take self portraits consecutively every day and in looking at my very inactive Instagram recently I noticed that my soul as an artist has been covered up by all of the other things that get my attention. Lots of this is important stuff: I make dinner, I wipe little noses, and I support and mentor incredible young people, I spend meaningful time with my husband. But I forgot about me. I forgot that this smile is genuine and she’s really committed to everyone’s happiness, but often not committed enough to her own. So well, I may not be committing to a goal. I can’t keep, I am committing to self. This means art every day, creativity every day, joyful, and fervent relationship every day. I don’t know what it will look like, but I do know it’ll be the best reward for Self that I can offer. And I have a feeling it will let the little light in me shine even brighter for those that I’m trying to share it with.

Another one on the books! Re|engage conference #4. Get ready team. We’re coming for ya.

We love the fall. There is hustle and bustle in new things to discover. Sometimes I feel like Ferris Bueller had it right: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and slow down, you might miss it.” ……. Also enjoy a special cameo…..

Self portrait 7: I’ve been “enjoying” more regular workouts. But this day I had a buddy. We went for a walk that turned into a jog, and she kept exclaiming “mommy I love this!!!” - not sure if she meant the activity or the company but either way, bonding with my kiddo was an amazing mom moment. “Me, too, baby. Me, too.”
