1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 #7

Via the Supercar Registry William: This ZL-1 #7 is still around as far as I know. I found it and the engine in WI in 1982. Didn't have the horses to buy both and passed it along to Jim Price. He bought the package and did a nice job on the resto. Jim sold it in the '90s; don't know who owns it today. I believe Adams raced #7 with an L72. The ZL1 engine ended up in a '67 Camaro.

Our Story

The “NicKey” name/brand means Hi-Performance. The Iconic name was was first used in the automotive arena by NicKey Chevrolet of Chicago. The trademark “K” was turned backwards circa 1958.

This Chicago based insitution was founded by Mr. Nickey in the 1920s. It was later aquired by the Stephani family which owned and managed the dealership until its closing at the end of 1973.

During their tenure and under the gudiance of Al Sielig, VP of fixed operations, NicKey Chevrolet became the largest automobile reatiler in the USA, with both vehicles and parts sales.

NicKey Chevrolet was involved with many forms of Automobile racing, starting in the 1950s. During the go fast Muscle car era of the 1960s, NicKey Chevrolet created the “Super Car” genre as we know it today. Any Chevy dealer in the know could order a special RPO/regular production order, Muscle Car. However, only NicKey Chevrolet could you get a car that even the factory would not dare build. You could buy it right off the showroom floor and finance it on the spot. Other noted dealers soon followed suit.

When the NicKey dealership closed its doors and was sold off to Keystone Chevrolet, the key performance minded individuals opened a full service speed shop known as NicKey Chicago. NicKey Chicago was open until 1977.

Fast forward to the fourth generation Camaro, introduced in 1993.

At the end of its long life cycle GM decided to cancel the Camaro after the 2002 Model year. A specialty vehicle company, with close ties to GM called GMMG decided to build a limited run of 69 Camaros to match and commemorate the original famed ZL1 Camaros of 1969, of which only 69 production units were built.

Stefano Bimbi commissioned one of these limited production, 69 GMMG ZL1s to commemorate NicKey Chevrolet, the Iconic Chicago based dealership.

This special car was unveiled and displayed at the Chevy Vette Fest show at the Donald E. Stephens convention center in the Fall of 2002. The car generated more than its fair share of attention and the idea to resurrect the NicKey Chicago brand was born.

Since 2002 Bimbi legally acquired the rights and intellectual properties in order to resurrect the brand and once again build NicKey Super Camaros (and other cars) bearing the NicKey Name.

Today the business is known as NicKey Performance, Inc which has been located in the Western Suburbs of Chicago / Saint Charles since its inception.

The company also provides performance mechanical work and upgrades to most modern performance vehicles and features in house chassis Dyno tuning.

NicKey is once again the place to purchase Hi-Performance speed equipment/parts as well as have them installed.

NicKey Performance is also known as the go to shop to purchase Modern and Vintage special interest and collectable vehicles. The company holds Illinois dealer licence 3933.

Since its inception NicKey has delivered cars all across the country as well as to various parts of the globe.

During its tenure NicKey has been commission to build vehicles for: Hot Rod Magazine, the Yenko family and club, The Fred Gibb Family. Some of the cars reside in private collections and museums, but most are in the hands of enthusiasts who drive and use them in motor sports events.
