Yes, my videotape digitalization project keeps turning up images of me looking like the real Ron Burgundy. :-)
In late August of 1981, I covered the close encounter that Voyager II was having with Saturn for PBS in LA. It was a half-hour documentary that included an extensive interview with Carl Sagan at a time when his "Cosmos" had just taken the nation by storm the year before.
He was very pleasant, his usual incredible interview self. Afterwards, I walked him to his car in the KCET parking lot. We got into a discussion (debate) about the UFO topic. I wondered why he could be so insistent that the Universe was teeming with life but equally adamant that they couldn't possibly be here despite the voluminous reports of pilots, military, police, etc.
I'm writing a book now — "Strange Visitors: Close Encounters of the Hollywood Kind" — and that story will be a few pages of it. I've never forgotten it, such a clear moment in my life.
Saturn and Beyond - PBS Documentary - 1981 In August of 1981, I hosted the PBS documentary "Saturn and Beyond" that was produced by KCET in Los Angeles, the same space and studios where Carl Sagan pro...

I know it looks like I'm on some kind of nostalgia tour (and maybe I am), but to explain: most of this is because after all these years I've just gotten most of my news videotapes that I've never watched transferred to MP4 and Apple Pro Res. I don't expect anyone to watch these things, but it is fun to see that I rocked the Ron Burgundy look before there was a Ron Burgundy!
For this one, I remember working at PBS in LA, covering the space beat for Newsbeat with Clete Roberts, and raising the money to send myself and a camera crew to Cape Canaveral to cover the 2nd launch of Space Shuttle Columbia. That was so damn thrilling...
Space Shuttle Columbia - PBS Coverage - November 1981 Back in 1981, I was a new reporter for the PBS LA series "Newsbeat." Space was one of my primary beats. I covered the Voyager II encounter with Saturn out at...

Just found the rest of these Polaroids that I took of the trip that Steve Suggs, Dave Rody, Chuck Henry and I took to Yucatan for "Eye on LA" back in 1984. Steve passed on August 16th, such a loss, and there will be an LA life celebration for him (information on the graphic below).

Back in 1972, when I was 18 years old, I may have been the youngest delegate to the Democratic National Convention ever. That was the year the voting age was dropped to 18 so no one that young could likely have been a delegate at previous conventions. I'd been working for Senator George McGovern since January of that year and even though he supposedly had the votes, when we arrived in Miami there were credential challenges, etc., all aimed at depriving him the nomination. He did get the nod, but lost in a super-landslide to Richard Nixon that year. That's me with our delegation chair Blaine Whipple. What a haircut (or rather the lack of one)!

While reading about Carlos Santana celebrating his 77th birthday, I remembered that I'd covered his concert at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon back on June 25, 1978. I was a reporter/anchor at KVAL back then, my first TV gig. That's rock promoter Bill Graham behind me with the sunglasses. Great concert, BTW, I didn't get to see it all because I had to get back to station and get the piece ready for air!

The nationally syndicated 'Jump Start' comic (400 newspapers) just named its new character — an enormous quarterback — 'Bryce Zabel'!
Thanks to the creator/cartoonist and my good buddy Robb Armstrong who used my name because he liked the sound of it. 😎
In all candor, my primary football playing experience ended in the fifth grade. Talk about fantasy football!
