Inflatable form concrete construction is an innovative technique that streamlines the building process and reduces costs. This method involves inflating a form made of materials like plastic fabric, then covering it with concrete to create structures. Notable for its efficiency and cost-effectiveness, it can significantly reduce the labor and time traditionally required in construction, particularly for dome-shaped structures or houses. The start of this architectural experiment begins in Joshua Tree where AE has set up shop.

We are delighted to share this architectural design, a glowing 135-foot-tall multi-use building that aims to be an iconic beacon in the heart of Hollywood on Cahuenga Boulevard just north of the Sunset intersection. This slender, twelve-storey structure, with three levels being subterranean, is wrapped in a rhombus-patterned ETFE facade, backlit by programmable RGB lighting for dynamic and visually captivating displays.

Inside, the building offers a variety of uses, including a hotel, retail space, a restaurant, a rooftop bar, parking, and a basement club with a stage, green room, kitchen, and bar. A robotic parking system, managed by ‘Volley Automation’ and attended by human valets, provides 142 spaces across five levels. Above, four floors are dedicated to hotel accommodations, comprising 35 Hollywood Sign facing guestrooms, including four large corner suites. The crown is the 11th and 12th floors, which house a restaurant with an adjoining outdoor patio, connecting to a rooftop bar and event area with sweeping panoramic views of the Hollywood Hills. Adding to its allure, the ground level features retail space with a speakeasy-style connection to an underground club, creating an exclusive and immersive experience for guests.

Building a building is a functional endeavor, focused on erecting a structure to meet specific needs or purposes. Making architecture, on the other hand, is a transformative art that not only addresses function but also elevates human experience, context, and culture through intentional design and aesthetic considerations.

Rendering versus reality

Captured in a serene moment of the Hollywood Hills, within the glass walls I designed and built. The unparalleled lens of the late Julius Shulman immortalized not just a room, but a story of love for architecture, my post and beam sanctuary.

It’s a rewarding challenge to design architecture that blurs the boundaries between the natural and the built environment. As an extension of the hillside, this land-form friendly next-generation modern home is a blend of structural aesthetics and sustainability.

No structural element takes this extreme curvature better than concrete, appearing as though the home itself is a part of the hill it rests upon. The wing-like floor overhangs add a dramatic touch, shadowing a covered deck. A partially cantilevered infinity-edge swimming pool frames a panoramic view of the Los Angeles skyline. All together, the composition of architecture, water, city, and sky is iconic.

Rendering vs. Reality: The vision encapsulated in architectural renderings, a theoretical image of the building, can be contrasted and compared with the built reality, assessing how the tangible structure embodies the initial concept, highlighting both its faithfulness to the original design and the adaptations necessitated by real-world constraints.

Architecturally exposed concrete represents a quintessential example of the harmonious fusion between form and function, where the raw materiality of concrete is harnessed to create a visual and tactile masterpiece that simultaneously embodies the strength and durability of its structural properties, while conveying a sense of elegance, minimalism, and timeless beauty that speaks to the very essence of human creativity and ingenuity.

Most homes in Los Angeles are made from cheap wood sticks and gypsum sandwiched paper. The cheapness of type five construction is the economic default, however concrete and steel wins in the long run.

The first floor is rising out of the dirt! It’s been over a year to get out of the ground and while that may seem long there’s actually 40 concrete piles and four levels of pools, decks, grade beams and retaining walls placed to support a 4,000 sf basement and 180 foot long pool floating above the hill 30 feet. Looking upslope from below it appears huge while this video from the street level it appears a third the size.

Our all exposed architectural concrete 11,000 sf home will showcase a new type of concrete that is more environmentally friendly.
