Home of the French Dip Sandwich
Philippe the Original is where you can get a taste of LA history. In business since 1908, Philippe’s is home to the French Dipped Sandwich and is one of Los Angeles' most historic and longest operating restaurants. One day in 1918, the original owner, Philippe Mathieu inadvertently dropped a sliced french roll into the roasting pan filled with juice still hot from the oven while serving a guest. The patron, a policeman, took the sandwich anyway and returned the next day with some friends asking for some more dipped sandwiches. The rest is history.
Today, Philippe’s is operated by descendants of the family that brought the restaurant in the 1920’s and moved it to the current location in 1951. The family has tried to preserve its original history, including sawdust-covered floors, communal tables and 45-cent coffee.
Breakfast is served daily until 10:30 a.m. French dips are available single-dipped, double-dipped or wet in various versions, including pastrami, roast beef, leg of lamb, roasted pork, turkey and ham. Homemade sides such as Macaroni Salad, Coleslaw and Potato Salad are the perfect complement to the French Dip.
