One of my patients attempted su***de in her room last night. When I stepped foot on the unit this morning, I smelt the stench of death as I normally do when my spirit senses someone is about to die. A young yet fearless soul is what crossed my mind as I saw her lying lifeless on the ICU bed before leaving work today. With each passing day, I gain a newfound perspective on life.

Several years ago, I launched a fundraiser to collect money for books for at-risk youth living in Atlanta, Georgia. In less than 30 days, we raised $1000 and received over 500 book donations. I gift wrapped all of the books and on Christmas Eve, passed them out to the young children living in my neighborhood. They were thrilled. I think I may do a relaunch for Halloween and Christmas for the kids out here in South Central LA. Black kids love to read!

Sometimes I ask myself, "Why did God choose me? Why do I have to be the one to ruffle feathers and bring about social change? Why can't I just live a normal life and fit in with everyone else?" It's not easy being a leader and going against the grain. It's very costly and risky to think outside the box and live a life of resistance. But I remind myself of the purpose for which I was created and that's what keeps me going. It's bigger than me.

Let's all help Tariq Nasheed reach his fundraising goal of $500,000 because this documentary is well overdue.
