Interact Theatre Company

Professional theatre artists bringing bold ensemble works to the L.A. stage and on the web, specializing in world classics and new American plays.

In January of 1990 in Los Angeles, actor Barry Heins invited fifteen of his transplanted New York actor friends, homesick for their former theatrical community, to a vacant apartment to do an unrehearsed reading of a play. Twenty years later Interact Theatre Company has become a regional standard of excellence in 99-seat theater. The actors and artists of Interact came together for the love of theater, and that passion has sustained the company through several moves and many changes. Now in residence at the NoHo Arts Center, Interact is not just "an actors' collective," but a family of actors, producers, writers, directors and supporters.

Interact Theatre Company is a collective of professional theatre artists dedicated to bringing entertaining, culturally enriching, and affordable theatre to Los Angeles. Our programming includes main stage productions, free weekly play readings, a play development lab, and a highly lauded two-week summer theatre camp for underserved youth (InterPLAY). The company regularly performs staged readings of classic plays for UCLA School of Law and the Los Angeles Public Library. The company has been working in-residence at the Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles, 1238 W. 1st Street, Los Angeles, CA 90026 since 2017.

New tax incentives for charitable giving in 2020 came in March with passage of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The law gives donors who plan to take the standard deduction the option to claim an above-the-line deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions to operating charities. The CARES Act also gives donors who will itemize deductions an option to elect a 100% of AGI deduction limit for cash donations, and deduction amounts above this limit may be carried over for up to five years.

Terrence Howard To Star In & Direct ‘Delta Blues’ TV Drama From ‘Ozark’ Producer Zero Gravity Management

Interact Theatre Company, 2016 - 2018 IN REVIEW

Products

Interact Theatre Company has earned its reputation as one of the most respected companies in the Los Angeles theatre community by presenting critically acclaimed productions for almost three decades under Actors’ Equity Association’s 99-Seat Plan and Agreement. Those productions have received, in total, almost 100 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle, Ovation, Valley Theatre League, Maddy and Scenie Awards. The company also received recognition from Assemblyman Tom LaBonge for its outstanding achievement in theatre. The Los Angeles Times praised ITC as “one of L.A.’s true theatre successes,” and NoHo News called Interact “a company of hard-hitting professionals with a rare and undeniable combination of heart and expertise.”

The company recently presented two hit plays: the West Coast premiere of the Off-Broadway comedy, “Nice Fish,” by Mark Rylance and Louis Jenkins at The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles, and “Other People’s Money” by Jerry Sterner, at Pico Playhouse.

Santa Monica Daily Press’s Cynthia Citron wrote of “Other People’s Money,” “Jerry Sterner’s play is an earnest, extremely intelligent, beautifully written, and often funny play. And Oliver Muirhead’s direction complements the dialogue perfectly. But the outstanding ingredient in this emotional potpourri is the solid performances of the five actors. Each of them is extraordinary in his own way, and together they form, in my view, the very best acting ensemble to be seen currently in Los Angeles.”

Of “Nice Fish,” LA Weekly raved, “Brilliant, stunning… Go!”, and the L.A. Daily News said “Expect to be hooked.” The Los Angeles Times gave ITC a Calendar section front page review, wherein veteran drama critic F. Kathleen Foley exclaimed, “Even the design elements are first rate.”

InterPLAY, our highly lauded summer theatre camp for underserved youth in North Hollywood, celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2019, and “The Pulitzer Prize Winners: 10 Plays from 10 Decades,” our month staged play readings for the North Hollywood Amelia Earhart Regional Library, played to capacity audiences. In 2019 the company also presented the Los Angeles premiere reading of “Ripcord” by David Lindsay-Abaire, as part of Los Angeles Public Library’s “LA Made” series. 2019 also marked our 20th Anniversary of presenting two staged readings of classic plays per year for UCLA School of Law. The Los Angeles Public Library and UCLA School of Law staged readings are always open to the public and free of charge.

Interact Theatre Company continues to offer our members and patrons free online play readings and discussion forums via ZOOM, including a recent in-depth conversation on diversity, systemic prejudice, and inequality in our country, especially as it pertains to the BIPOC community. We at Interact know that the theatre can play a powerful role in changing perceptions and attitudes, and we are committed to using the artistic gifts that we have been blessed with to help nurture greater understanding and change.
