From the Pasadena Star News June 7, 2026
On May 31, the service club, founded in 1949, welcomed all to the free event held at Grocery Outlet on Lake Avenue, the heart of many an Altadena gathering before and since the deadly Eaton fire. Grocery Outlet’s owners, Jose and Sandra Valenzuela, are longtime Rotarians, and proof of the club’s “Service Above Self” motto.
They were there with Supervisor Kathryn Barger and club President Brad Roeber to do the pancake breakfast proud, but also to celebrate Mark Mariscal, past president of Altadena Rotary, president of the Altadena Library Foundation, and wearer of so many hats in Rotary and Altadena I can’t list them all here. (Well, I can, but I would use up my word count.)
Mariscal received the Service Above Self Award from Rotary International on April 25 in Chula Vista. It is the highest honor that Rotary International can give…
And the donations from the breakfast will benefit Altadena Mountain Rescue Team and Christmas Tree Lane. And the donations from the breakfast will benefit Altadena Mountain Rescue Team and Christmas Tree Lane.

Altadena Rotary Club Pancake Breakfast and Community Service Awards Ceremony was held last weekend.
Pasadena Rotary members joined Altadena Rotary to celebrate fellow Rotarian Mark Mariscal, recipient of the 2025–2026 Service Above Self Award. Presented by Rotary District 5300 Governor Gilda Riazi Moshir, the award recognizes Mark's longstanding leadership and commitment to service.
In his remarks, Mark thanked the Rotary Club of Pasadena for its partnership and support, particularly following the Eaton Fire and the recovery and community service efforts that followed. His comments highlighted the strong bond between our clubs and our shared commitment to serving those in need.
The ceremony took place during Altadena Rotary's semiannual Pancake Breakfast, a longstanding tradition that raises funds for the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team, the Christmas Tree Lane Association and other local causes. The event brought together Rotarians, community leaders, and residents in support of organizations that play an important role in the life and safety of Altadena.
