What Is Shadow Work Really The Truth Behind The Trend 09/30/2026

What if your shadow holds more than the parts of yourself you’re ashamed of? What if it also holds the confidence, creativity, and voice you learned to hide?

I’m Dr. James, a transpersonal psychologist, and I’ve just released the first episode of a five-part series exploring shadow work and Carl Jung’s shadow concept.

I share a personal story about driving in Los Angeles—and how looking at my own anger helped me understand what my reaction was revealing about me.

I’d love to hear your perspective: Has shadow work helped you reclaim a part of yourself you once felt you had to hide?

Watch here: https://youtu.be/a80rdp2zj7I

If this resonates with you, I’d love for you to subscribe on YouTube and join me for the rest of this five-part series.

You’re Not Falling Out of Love—You’re Sabotaging Your Relationship 09/14/2026

Have you ever felt someone you love pulling away—and reacted by doing the very thing that pushed them even farther away?

Sometimes we think we’re falling out of love when what’s really happening is fear, old wounds, and unconscious patterns quietly sabotaging the relationship.

That’s what I explore in my newest Inward Connection episode:

“You’re Not Falling Out of Love—You’re Sabotaging Your Relationship.”

I created Inward Connection to bring psychology, consciousness, and personal growth out of the classroom and into the real situations we all face. If something I’ve shared has ever made you think differently, helped you understand yourself, or simply made you feel a little less alone, I’m asking for your support.

Please watch the video—and, most importantly, subscribe to my YouTube channel. Subscribing is free, but it makes an enormous difference in helping this work reach more people.

And if someone you know might need to hear this message, please share it with them.

Thank you for helping me grow Inward Connection. ❤️

A confession: for a long time, I hid behind text.

It felt safer to type these posts than to sit in front of a camera and actually say them. To be honest, it's a bit frightening! anyway.... Some of you told me directly — "Why don't you just record yourself saying this?"

I didn't have a good answer, and I didn't want to say I was a chicken.... But I eventually stopped arguing with myself and just did it.

Every type of post you've read here now exists as a full episode on YouTube — me, on camera, going further into these ideas than a caption ever let me. It's the same work, Just now it's out of my mouth.

Here's the thing. Some of you asked for this. I built it, and now I actually need you to come find it. Here's why...

YouTube has a 1000-subscriber requirement before a channel can even be considered for their creator program, and that bar is about to double. I'd like to clear that goal before that happens — and I don't think I'll make it without support from the people in this group. And this group has nearly 5000 followers. Wouldn't that be amazing if you all clicked subscribe? 🙏😊

So: Help me out.... click the link and hit subscribe. 🙏😊
Let me say thanks in advance ❤️

Well... It's official, folks. Inward Connection is live on YouTube.

As you all know, I've been posting my thoughts here on Facebook for a while. But I kept getting pushed to make videos and talk... so I did. My videos are rough around the edges... and jump cuts... but I'm learning as I go, and I promise I'll get better.

I've been working on this for quite a while, and tonight I finally made the first four episodes public on YouTube.

Inward Connection grew out of my own experiences, my work in psychology, and a question I've spent a lot of my life exploring:

What happens when we begin looking at ourselves—and the stories we've believed about ourselves—a little differently?

These first episodes are personal. I talk about my own journey, the stories we tell ourselves, the automatic patterns we develop, and why we sometimes say yes when we desperately want to say no.

If you'd like to come along with me, all four episodes are here:

And if you'd like to help me get Inward Connection off the ground, visit the playlist, watch an episode (or all four!), give it a like, leave me a comment, and subscribe to the channel. 🥰

Every view, like, comment, and subscription helps—and I'd really love to hear what you think.

What if Your First Thought Isn’t Always the Truth

Have you ever noticed that your mind can make a decision before you even realize it’s made it?

A text goes unanswered…

Your mind says,
“They’re upset with me.”

You make a mistake…

Your mind says,
“I always mess things up.”

Something unexpected happens…

Your mind immediately starts predicting the worst.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

Our first reaction isn’t necessarily reality.

It’s often our brain doing what it has always done, trying to protect us using old experiences.

The problem is…

Yesterday’s survival strategy can become today’s unnecessary suffering.

What changes our lives isn’t eliminating those first thoughts.

It’s noticing them before we automatically believe them.

That tiny pause creates space.

Space to ask:

“Is this true?”

“What else could be true?”

“Am I reacting to what’s happening… or to something that happened long ago?”

Awareness doesn’t erase difficult emotions.

It simply gives us the freedom to choose our response instead of living on autopilot.

So here’s today’s reflection:

What’s one thought you’ve been treating as a fact… that might simply be your mind’s first reaction?

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Have you ever noticed that two people can experience the exact same event… and walk away with completely different meanings?

One person sees rejection.

Another sees redirection.

One person sees failure.

Another sees a lesson.

The event didn’t change.

The story did.

One of the most powerful questions I’ve learned to ask myself is:

“What story am I telling myself right now?”

Not because my feelings aren’t real.

Not because difficult things don’t happen.

But because our minds naturally fill in the blanks. We assume motives. We predict outcomes. We connect dots that may not actually belong together.

Sometimes we’re right.

Sometimes we’re simply reacting from old experiences that no longer fit the present moment.

Awareness doesn’t mean ignoring reality.

It means becoming curious about the lens through which you’re seeing it.

So here’s today’s reflection:

What story have you been telling yourself lately… and is there another explanation that’s just as possible?

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Every Relationship Is a Mirror

Have you ever noticed that the people who frustrate you the most often become your greatest teachers?

Work has a way of exposing parts of us that everyday life can hide.

The coworker who interrupts you. The manager who never seems to notice your effort. The person who gets the recognition you hoped for.

It's easy to conclude that they are the problem.
Sometimes they are.

But sometimes they're simply revealing something inside us that has been waiting to be understood.

Why did that comment linger all day? Why did that meeting leave you feeling small? Why did someone else's success feel like your failure?

These aren't signs that something is wrong with you.
They're invitations to look inward—to become curious about ourselves.

Self-growth doesn't begin when life becomes easier. It begins when we become curious about our own reactions.
The more we understand ourselves, the less we need other people to change before we can experience peace.

Relationships — at work, at home, and everywhere else — often become mirrors. They don't just show us who others are.

They show us who we're becoming.

One small practice: The next time someone triggers a strong reaction, pause before reacting and ask yourself one question — "What does this feeling remind me of?" Often the answer has less to do with the person in front of you and more to do with a story you've been carrying.

What relationship in your life has taught you the most about yourself?

Anxiety

Most people think anxiety is simply a fear of the future.

But often, it is something much more specific: the exhausting belief that you have to figure everything out right now.

Whether you're facing a life transition, a relationship challenge, or uncertainty about your career, the mind has a remarkable ability to manufacture urgency. It convinces you that if you don't have all the answers today, somehow, you're already falling behind.

I know this because I've been living it myself.
For the past several months, I've been searching for my next chapter professionally. Like many people navigating uncertainty, I've caught myself lying awake at night trying to solve the next six months before morning. My mind wanted guarantees that simply don't exist.

The more I tried to force certainty, the more anxious I became.

When this happens, it is easy to believe you're losing control.

But this frantic pressure isn't a character flaw. It is a biological survival mechanism.

To the primitive parts of our brain, uncertainty feels dangerous. Ambiguity is interpreted as a potential threat, so the sympathetic nervous system floods the body with stress hormones, urging us to create certainty as quickly as possible. Thousands of years ago, that response helped keep us alive.

Today, it often creates something very different:
A false deadline.

It convinces us that every important decision has to be made immediately. It keeps us staring at the ceiling at two o'clock in the morning, replaying conversations, worrying about the future, and trying to build a map for territory we haven't even walked yet.

What I've had to learn—and continue to practice—is that I do not have to solve the rest of my life today.

When that familiar pressure begins to rise, these are the practices I return to:

• Name the false deadline. Quietly remind yourself: "Yes, this is important, but it is not an emergency. I do not have to solve this right now."

• Shrink your timeline. Instead of trying to solve the whole problem, ask yourself, "What is one meaningful thing I can do today?" Submit one application. Make one phone call. Reach out to one person. Then let that be enough for today.

• Return to the present. Anxiety lives in an imagined future. Your body lives here, now. Feel your feet on the floor. Notice your breathing. Bring your attention back to the only moment in which you can actually take action, NOW.

One realization has helped me more than almost anything else:
When we finally arrive in what we call "the future," it will simply be another now.

The future is always experienced in the present moment.

You don't need to see the entire staircase before taking the first step. You don't need to see around every bend in the road to trust that the road continues.

When I look back over my own life, I realize that so many moments I thought would break me eventually worked themselves out in ways I never could have predicted.

That doesn't mean life is always easy.
It means uncertainty has never stopped life from unfolding.

Clarity rarely arrives through frantic overthinking. It usually appears quietly, after the nervous system settles and we create enough space to actually hear ourselves think.

So today, I'm choosing to trust the process instead of trying to control every outcome.

Maybe that's exactly what someone else needed to hear today.

What "false deadline" is your mind trying to convince you is an emergency right now?
I'd love to hear your thoughts below. Your experience may be exactly what someone else needs to read.

The Relational Cost of Healing

Here is the part of healing that people rarely talk about:
Growth doesn't just change you. It changes the ecosystem around you.

Sometimes, healing changes relationships. And sometimes, those changes lead to endings. As you grow, your conversations begin to shift.

The things that once entertained you no longer hold your attention.

The conflicts you once rehearsed lose their appeal.

The need to constantly prove yourself begins to soften.

You become interested in different questions.

Different ideas. Different ways of living.

And without anyone intending harm... some relationships begin to feel different. Not because either person is wrong. But because the relationship was built around a version of you that no longer exists.

Sometimes it feels as though growth changes the frequency of our lives. Or, if you prefer more psychological language, it changes our values, our boundaries, and the way our nervous system relates to the world.

When one person in a system changes, the entire system feels the shift. Some people will naturally grow alongside you. Others will gradually drift in different directions.

Neither response is a measure of someone's worth. It is often a reflection of where each person happens to be on their own journey.
That drifting can be painful. It can feel deeply isolating. But it can also be one of the quiet signs that your inner world is genuinely transforming. It is evidence that you are no longer willing to shrink yourself to fit into spaces you have outgrown.

Not everyone is meant to walk every chapter of our journey. Some people help shape who we become, and then move on. And perhaps the people who are meant to walk beside the person you're becoming haven't entered your life yet.

Both are gifts.

Have you ever had to navigate the quiet, sometimes lonely space between outgrowing your old circle and finding your new one?

Please share your thoughts below. Your experience may be exactly what someone else needs to read today.

Do you ever expect rejection before anyone actually rejects you?

Most people don't introduce themselves with words. They introduce themselves with defenses.

If you grew up being criticized, betrayed, abandoned, or made to feel powerless, your brain and nervous system did exactly what they were designed to do—they adapted. You may have learned to avoid vulnerability, control your environment, keep people at a distance, or apologize for simply existing.

The remarkable thing is that these survival strategies can become so familiar that they begin to feel like part of your personality.
I know this because I had to confront one of my own.
Growing up in New York City, sarcasm was simply part of the culture. It was quick, witty, and everyone around me communicated that way. I honestly thought I was being funny.
Then I moved to California.

Let's just say... my sarcasm wasn't always received with the same enthusiasm.

That experience forced me to ask an uncomfortable question:
Was sarcasm really part of my personality... or was it simply a survival strategy that had become my identity?

Changing that pattern wasn't easy. First, I had to become aware of it. Then I had to understand why it existed. Only then could I begin choosing a different response.

That's when I realized something important. Without realizing it... Survival slowly becomes identity. Somewhere along the journey, we stop asking,

"Who am I?"
and begin asking,
"What do I need to do to survive and fit in?"

Your brain learned these strategies for a reason. They helped you survive.

But the nervous system doesn't always recognize when life has changed. What once protected you can eventually prevent you from creating the very life you're trying to build.

Healing doesn't mean pretending your past never happened. It means recognizing when an old survival strategy is no longer serving you and allowing your nervous system to stop responding as though the danger still exists.

There is a profound difference between saying,

"This happened to me."
and
"This is who I am."

The next time you notice yourself becoming defensive, pause for just a moment. Notice the armor beginning to rise.
Then gently ask yourself:

"Am I responding to the person standing in front of me... or am I fighting a battle from my past?"

Take a slow breath. Remind yourself that this moment is different from those that wounded you. Then choose your next response consciously instead of automatically.

Our wounds are real. They deserve compassion. They deserve understanding. But they do not deserve permanent custody of our future. There is a difference between honoring your past.....and allowing it to introduce you for the rest of your life.

What might happen if your true personality finally got the chance to introduce itself... instead of your survival strategies?
