🐾 Big milestone for Evie! 🐾

At just 6.5 months old, Evie is already showing so much promise as a service dog in training. In this video, she’s on her very first outing to a busy public café, where she practiced staying calm, focused, and confident despite all the new sights, sounds, people, and distractions around her.

Evie did an amazing job patiently waiting and demonstrating the skills she’s been working so hard to learn while meeting with her potential match. We are thrilled to share that the visit was a success, and Evie has found her perfect match! 💜

We’re incredibly excited to watch this new team begin their journey together and grow into a strong partnership. Evie has a bright future ahead of her, and we can’t wait to see all they accomplish together.

Unity Service Dogs service dog training begins with extensive on and off-leash obedience, forming a solid base for all advanced tasks. Including solid stays with distractions.

A key element of this initial training is the “under” command, which teaches the dog to settle safely and discreetly in public spaces. This is vital for the dog’s protection, keeping them out of harm’s way from foot traffic, and it also demonstrates consideration for others by ensuring the dog remains unobtrusive.

We then customize further service dog tasks based on each client’s specific requirements to aid their disability.

Maple is thriving and so loved in her new home! Her gentle nature brings so much joy to the whole family. It’s amazing to see the special bond she’s formed, and how much comfort she brings. She was placed almost 6 months ago. 🐾

Autism service dogs like Maple can provide so much support for children and adults with autism, including companionship, reduced anxiety in social situations, assistance with transitions, and promoting independence.

Don’t let them get confused with emotional support animals. Autism service dogs can be specifically trained to aid their handler. These tasks include deep pressure therapy to provide a calming effect during moments of anxiety, grounding techniques to help individuals stay present and manage sensory overload, preventing wandering, and interrupting repetitive behaviors.

Let’s clear up some common misconceptions about service dogs. 🐾

A big one is the idea that service dogs are legally required to wear a vest. This isn’t true! The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) doesn’t mandate vests or specific ID for service dogs. While many handlers choose to use them for visibility and to deter questions, a vest alone doesn’t qualify a dog as a service animal.

The ADA protects individuals with disabilities and their service dogs, ensuring access to public places. What truly matters is the dog’s training to perform specific tasks that mitigate the handler’s disability.

So, next time you see a service dog, remember it’s the dog’s trained behavior, not the gear, that defines its role.

Maybe think twice before approaching or speaking to an unvested dog in public, this may be a service dog..it’s always polite to ask the handler first!

Check out baby Kingston! 🤩

At 13 weeks old, he’s building confidence and getting socialized, which is super important. Did you know that service dog training can start as early as 8 weeks?

We’re always on the lookout, evaluating puppies with the best health, personality, and trainability for service work. Kingston is an AKC red standard poodle male, and he’s got so much potential. He’ll be ready for placement in 2027, so stay tuned for updates on his journey! ❤️🐾

Unity Service Dogs always asks important questions when interviewing potential handlers for our dogs.

Is a Service Dog Right for YOU? Beyond the Training, It’s About Your Lifestyle

Deciding to get a service dog is a big deal. It’s not just about the dog’s training or what tasks they can perform. It’s also about whether YOU are truly ready for the responsibility and lifestyle change that comes with it. Before you even start looking at dogs, ask yourself these crucial questions:

Can You Maintain the Training?

A pre-trained service dog comes with a foundation of functional skills, but it’s up to you to maintain and reinforce that training long term. Are you prepared to dedicate time every day to practicing commands, reinforcing good behavior, and addressing any issues that arise? This isn’t a one-time thing; it’s an ongoing commitment.

Is Your Lifestyle a Good Fit?

A service dog isn’t just a pet; it’s a working partner that needs to be with you in many aspects of your life. Consider your daily routine, social activities, and living situation. Are you prepared to bring a dog with you to stores, restaurants, and other public places? Can you handle the potential stares, questions, and occasional challenges that may arise? Do you have the space and resources to provide a comfortable and enriching environment for a working dog?

Can You Handle the Extra Responsibility?

Beyond the training and lifestyle adjustments, owning a service dog comes with added responsibilities. You’ll need to manage their health, ensure they get enough exercise and mental stimulation, and advocate for their rights in public spaces. This requires time, energy, and a willingness to learn and adapt.

Do You Understand It’s Still a Dog?

While service dogs are highly trained, they are still dogs with their own needs, instincts, and personalities. They need playtime, affection, and the opportunity to engage in normal dog behaviors. Are you prepared to balance the working aspect of a service dog with the need to provide a fulfilling life for a canine companion?

Evie had her first big girl haircut today, and she was an absolute angel! 🥹

From the clippers to the blow dryer, she handled the pampering like a pro. It's so important to expose poodle puppies to grooming early on—nails, ears, the whole shebang. This was her second haircut. 🛁 ✂️

We groom our dogs ourselves regularly, including routine brushing, but as they get older, we also send them to professional groomers. This helps them get used to different people and environments. Plus, we work closely with our professional groomer, who gives us updates and feedback on their strengths and weaknesses, so we know what to focus on in training.

Evie is a 5 month old Black Standard Poodle Service Dog in training. She will be a future psychiatric or autism service dog. 🐾

Happy late Easter, everyone! 🌸🐣 Sometimes we’re so focused on training and caring for the dogs that social media takes a backseat.

But wanted to share that we got an update from Lotus’s owner that she was such a good girl at Church! 🙏🐾
