Last night at the White House Correspondents Dinner an armed gunman charged a security checkpoint and shot a Secret Service agent before he was taken into custody. Thanks to the swift response by law enforcement, President Trump, First Lady and the President’s cabinet are unharmed. Also it appears no one else at the dinner was seriously injured, and the agent is recovering. Political violence of any sort is reprehensible and has no place in our country.

Please pray for the slain Chicago Police officer and another Chicago Police Officer fighting for their life. In this profession an officer never knows if they will make it home at the end of their shift. God bless the CPD 💙

HB5011 passed the House 107-0 because people understand what’s at stake. Policing works best when officers are focused on what’s actually happening in their communities.

HB5011 protects officers from being pushed toward quota-style expectations, while still holding departments to high standards of accountability and professionalism.

I had the chance to spend time with the team from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and get a closer look at their mobile command unit in action. This is the kind of equipment and coordination that makes a real difference when emergencies hit.

I appreciate Director Ted Berger for taking the time to walk us through the operation and the work being done to protect our communities.

I joined Fox 32 last night to talk about HB 5011, my police quota bill.

It passed the House 107-0, a clear message that public safety comes first. This bill protects the integrity of policing, strengthens accountability, and helps build trust between officers and the communities they serve.

Had the opportunity to meet with the Teamsters Joint Council 25, and I’m grateful for the time to sit down and have real conversations about the issues that matter most to working men and women across our state.

The Teamsters represent hardworking people who keep Illinois moving every single day. We talked through the challenges they’re facing, the importance of safe working conditions, and making sure their voices are heard in Springfield. These are the kinds of conversations that shape better policy and stronger communities.

I’ll keep showing up, listening, and fighting for policies that respect the work people do and the families they provide for.

Last week, I was proud to see HB5011 pass the House unanimously.

As a veteran police officer of nearly 20 years, I’ve seen firsthand what happens when numbers start driving decisions. Our job was never meant to hit quotas. It’s grounded in judgment, integrity, and serving our communities the right way.

The general assembly passed the original quota bill in 2014. But the practice has continued by police administrators under the guise of “contacts”. The public has no appetite for police quotas and clearly the General Assembly feels the same with its 107-0 passage in the House.

Now it moves to the Senate with maximum momentum!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Rep. Sheehan Passes Legislation to End Backdoor Police Quotas and Strengthen Community Trust

Homer Glen, IL…State Representative Patrick Sheehan announced that House Bill 5011 unanimously passed the House, legislation aimed at ending backdoor quota systems in policing and restoring a stronger foundation of trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

“With nearly 20 years in law enforcement, I’ve seen how these systems impact both officers and the public,” said Rep. Sheehan. “When officers feel pressure to generate numbers, it changes how they approach their job. This legislation gives officers the freedom to use their judgment and focus on real issues in their communities.”

HB 5011 closes a critical loophole in current law by prohibiting the use of so-called “performance metrics” as a substitute for ticket quotas. While Illinois law already bans requiring a set number of citations, some departments have continued to evaluate officers based on “points of contact,” including traffic stops and detentions. This bill ensures those practices cannot be used to pressure officers into unnecessary enforcement actions.

The bill reinforces that municipalities cannot require or compare officers based on citation counts and ensures performance evaluations remain consistent with these protections across Illinois, including in home rule communities.

“Law enforcement works best when there is trust,” Rep. Sheehan added. “This is a step toward strengthening that trust and getting back to real community policing.”

HB 5011 received bipartisan support in the House and now moves to the Senate for further consideration.

I’ve spent nearly 20 years in law enforcement. I know what it takes to catch dangerous criminals. HB 5521 is reckless and dangerous. It strips away the tools that solve crimes—facial recognition, fingerprints, voice ID, eye scans—and ties officers’ hands while crime keeps rising.

Facial recognition was used to identify the Venezuelan migrant charged with killing Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman on March 19. Even so, Illinois Democrats are doing everything they can to handcuff law enforcement and coddle criminals!

Imagine having to tell a victim’s family the technology that could have identified the suspect was taken off the table by lawmakers. That’s exactly what this bill does! It literally takes us back to the stone age in fighting crime, making our communities less safe. I stand with law enforcement and I will fight this!

I had the opportunity to visit the hardworking men and women of IBEW Local 176, part of the Will & Grundy Counties Building Trades Council. These are the men and women wiring our schools, powering our businesses, and putting in the long hours most people never see.

We talked about the future of the trades, the importance of strong training programs, and what it takes to keep good-paying jobs right here in our communities. I’ve always believed that when we support skilled trades, we strengthen families and build a stronger Illinois from the ground up.

Grateful for the conversation, the insight, and the work you do every single day! 💪🏻☘️

The only person who was in the wrong place at the wrong time in the tragic death of Sheridan Gorman was the illegal immigrant accused murderer who should have never have been in this country in the first place.

I joined WJOL to talk about a growing concern in Illinois: the disparity between funding for state police and so-called “peacekeeper” programs.

While “Violence Interruptor” efforts are receiving over $100 million a year, many of the tools and resources our law enforcement rely on continue to fall miles behind.

Are we putting our dollars where they actually make a difference?
