Please join us in welcoming Paramedic Jon Joseph. Jon first obtained his EMT certification in 1981. For those trying to do the math, that’s 41 years. Yes, you read that correctly, 41 years in EMS! Jon started his career following in his dad's footsteps and joined the local volunteer fire department. He moved up through the ranks and eventually became a second-generation fire chief. To this day, he is still the fire chief for Lizton Union Township Fire Department.
Following through with his career, he obtained his paramedic license in 1994. Once again, for those trying to do the math, that’s 28 years! He started working for Boone County EMS in April of 1992. Eventually, he went part-time and left in 2006. In January 2000, Jon took a job offer at Washington Township / Avon Fire Department. There he moved up through the ranks and became a battalion chief.
As you can see, Jon has a true passion for emergency medicine. We are happy to have such a wealth of knowledge as a part of our team. So please, join us in welcoming Jon to the agency and congratulating him on becoming the C shift EDO!

Today some of our members took advantage of the nice weather and worked on various different skills. Most of the training focused on water supply and flowing water out of a ladder truck. Todays training was designed to help some of our up and coming engine chauffeurs and our new firefighters.
Often times in rural areas, water has to be brought to the scene. When this happens, usually, a dump tank is set up. The engine will then draft the water from the dump tank and pump it to the destination. In this case, it is not practical to supply a ladder truck from a dump tank. This was done as a training demonstration to show how fast water is consumed.

Lizton Engine 101 assisting North Salem Fire Rescue/Eel River Township Fire with a crash involving a semi and a paving roller at SR 75 and County Road 900 N.

SR39 northbound is closed near County Road 800 North due to a car crash. Avoid the area for the next hour for cleanup. Injuries are minor.

Shortly after 14:00 this afternoon, Engine 101 and Tanker 101 were dispatched to the intersection of State Road 39 and County Road 625 North for a report of a vehicle fire. Engine 101 was first on the scene and quickly contained the fire to the front half of the vehicle. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

This morning for training we worked on RIT skills and scenarios. We completed hands on skills by packaging a downed firefighter for removal, supplying emergency air, and calling a MAYDAY.
A MAYDAY is an emergency call when a firefighter is trapped, lost, or needs help in an emergency situation.
RIT is a Rapid Intervention Team which is a group of firefighters assigned to be on standby and ready to activate if a firefighter is injured, lost, or has any other emergency while working on the fireground.

Just like that recliner supports you through your favorite sports season. So grab that tackle box or some wrenches and your favorite hat, and have the best weekend possible!
*slaps the knee* Welp, Happy Father's Day Weekend!

Last evening around 5:00 PM, Grass Rig 101 and Tanker 101 assisted North Salem Fire Rescue/Eel River Township Fire with a large ravine fire. Due to the rough terrain, trucks were unable to access the fire. The only solution was to spray water from the top and then send manpower down after the bulk of the fire was knocked down.
Across all of Central Indiana, we are experiencing extremely dry conditions. Although we are not under a burn ban, we want to encourage everyone to be very cautious when burning. Fire can rapidly spread in these dry conditions, and it is imperative to have a water source nearby in the event that a fire gets out of control.

Heads up if you are traveling on US 136 west of town!
🚧⚠️ TRAFFIC ALERT ⚠️🚧
US 136 and CR 300 West temporarily closed due to an incident involving a semi-truck and trailer carrying hot tar. Road closure expected until 1pm today. Please seek alternate routes. Stay safe!

Shortly before 5:00 PM this evening, Engine 101, Ambulance 101, and Medic 111 were dispatched to the 59-mile marker of I-74 westbound for a vehicle accident. The first arriving units were met with a vehicle under the county road 75 East bridge. Both occupants were alert and not injured.
Due to the steep slope, the vehicle had to be secured by using chains and come alongs before the occupants could be removed. Both elderly occupants were able to get out of the vehicle with assistance after the stabilization was complete. Both patients refused any medical evaluation, and miraculously there was very minimal damage to the vehicle. Westbound traffic was backed up for just over an hour. The cause of the incident was due to the driver falling asleep while driving.
We want to take this time to express the importance of not driving while tired. These out-of-state individuals were fortunate, because the outcome could have been extremely worse.

Grass Rig 101 and Tanker 101 responded today to assist Jamestown Volunteer Fire Department with a grass fire on I-74 just east of the State Road 75 exit. Crews quickly extinguished and contained two separate fires. The cause of the fire was determined to be from a truck with overheating brakes.

On this Memorial Day, we remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our great nation. From the very beginning, this national holiday has been about paying homage to the American heroes who have given their lives to defend our freedom and protect our democracy.
At Lizton Union Township Fire Department, we believe that it is our duty to remember and celebrate the rich history behind this important day. It was first celebrated as Decoration Day in 1868, after the Civil War, to honor fallen soldiers by decorating their graves. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be held on the last Monday of May.
As we reflect on the sacrifices made by our brave servicemen and women, we offer our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones. We recognize the selflessness and immense bravery of those who have put themselves in harm's way to defend our country. Thank you for your service and your sacrifice.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there! We hope you enjoy your special day.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued a Red Flag Warning for most of Central Indiana from 12:00 PM until 8:00 PM EDT Thursday.
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior. Any fire that starts could quickly spread out of control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

This morning around 07:45, Lizton Engine 101 was dispatched to the intersection of County Road 500 West and County Road 750 South in Boone County to assist Jamestown Volunteer Fire Department with a vehicle accident. Upon arriving, there were two vehicles involved. Both patients were extricated by fire crews, and were transported to local hospitals.
Please contact Boone County Sheriff’s Department for any media inquiries.

Lizton Tanker 101 assisted Danville Fire Department with a working residence fire in the 3800 block of West US 36.
As seen in the pictures, a dump tank was placed as a portable water source for crews fighting the fire. Unfortunately, this caused the road to be shut down for a period of time.

Shoutout to all the 9-1-1 dispatchers out there who work tirelessly each day to keep us safe. Your hard work and dedication to your job do not go unnoticed. It takes a lot of courage to answer those emergency calls, and we appreciate you for being the backbone of emergency response. (Residential Fire Investigation Update)
Brownsburg Indiana March 31, 2023
At approximately 8:10 PM, Brownsburg fire territory responded to a residential fire in the Windridge subdivision near E County Road 700N and N Green Street. Smoke and fire were visible upon arrival. One resident was home at the time of the fire and escaped prior to fire crew arrival with minor injuries. Amidst high winds, crews were able to extinguish the fire eliminating the risk of fire spreading to either neighbors home. The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time. We are thankful the homeowner escaped safely & our fire crews and medics sustained no injuries during the weather advisory. Please do your part by creating a fire escape plan for your home and practice with your family.

Strong storms are expected across all of Central Indiana this evening. We encourage you to follow US National Weather Service Indianapolis Indiana for updates regarding this storm.
All of Central Indiana is now under an ENHANCED RISK for Severe Weather. Rain will diminish through midday. Additional rain and storms will arrive later in the day. Some storms could be strong to severe this evening with damaging winds as the main threat. Severe Storms will be most likely after 900 PM. Isolated tornadoes and hail are possible.

Today, the on-duty crews took Engine 101 to North Salem for a joint training on drafting water from a portable dump tank.
Drafting water from a dump tank is a common practice in rural areas without a fire hydrant nearby. Tankers will shuttle water from a fire hydrant to the scene. The water will then be pumped into the engine and to the fire. It is imperative that our crews keep their skills sharp.
Thank you, North Salem Fire Rescue/Eel River Township Fire, for allowing us to come and train together. Mutual aid trainings like this keep everyone on the same page when an emergency happens.

This afternoon we assisted Jamestown Fire with an incident on I-74 at the 47 mile marker. Pictured here is St.Vincent StatFlight on the ground, preparing for takeoff. Please see media from Boone County Sheriff’s Office pictured below for further details.

Due to the rural area, tankers had to be used to shuttle water from a hydrant to the scene. We want to thank our surrounding departments for their assistance. No injuries were reported.

Your Lizton / Union Township firefighters are out on this beautiful Saturday morning training on engine company operations. Stretching hand lines and hose advancement were todays topic.

At approximately 1:30 PM, crews were dispatched to the 6600 block of north State Road 39 for a vehicle accident. Ambulance 101 first arrived on the scene to find a single vehicle that was inverted in the ditch. The patient was able to self-extricate. The driver of the vehicle was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. State Road 39 was closed in both directions for about an hour.

Earlier this morning, Tanker 101 assisted Pittsboro Fire Department with a working fire. Often times in rural areas, fire hydrants are not readily available. Therefore water has to be brought to the scene. The water is then dumped in portable “dump tanks” and then pumped to the fire. Thankfully no one was injured during this event.

Tonight, the department had our annual Firemen’s Dinner. This is a yearly dinner that the department hosts to reflect on the previous year.
This year we wanted to recognize our fire chief, Jon Joseph, for being the chief for 30 years. Many things have changed in that time frame, but the internal goals have not.
We also want to take this time to recognize a special guest we had. Todd Plough, the owner of Ploughe's Wrecker Service, has been a massive asset to the department for many years. Whether we need assistance on a scene or a car to cut up for extrication training, Todd and his company are always willing to lend us a helping hand. Thank you, Todd, for the many years of invaluable training!

Tonight your Lizton / Union Township firefighters were out conducting training on area familiarization, hose deployments, and hydrant drills.

We just got word from NORAD that Santa & his Reindeer have made it safely back to the North Pole to take a break before getting ready for next Christmas. From the officers & members of the Lizton/Union Twp Fire Dept we would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas.

It is no surprise to anyone that we will be experiencing a significant winter event in the coming days. With old man winter showing his ugly face, here are some things to consider.
❄️ Always keep gas generators away from homes & garages.
❄️ If you are cold, your pets are cold too! Keep them bundled up this winter.
❄️ When it's freezing, limit time outdoors.
❄️ Bring pets inside when temperatures dip.
❄️ Slow down and, if possible, stay off the roads during and after a storm.
