***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE***

MAN SENTENCED TO 130 YEARS IN PRISON FOR MURDER

DANVILLE, IN- On January 10, 2022, Antonio Lane was sentenced to 130 years in prison for the murder of Freddie Darnell Hegwood Jr. The murder occurred on December 15, 2020 in Hendricks County just outside Brownsburg, Indiana. On May 6, 2021, after a six-month investigation, Lane was charged with Murder, Attempted Murder (Level 1 Felony), two (2) counts of Criminal Recklessness (Level 5 felonies), and Criminal Organization and the Use of a Firearm sentencing enhancements.

At approximately 3:01 pm on December 15, 2020, Hendricks County Sheriff's deputies assisted by Brownsburg Police Department officers were dispatched to an eastside subdivision after numerous 911 calls were regarding shots fired. As Brownsburg Police officers arrived, they discovered a young male being tended to by several bystanders from the subdivision. The injured individual was later identified as Freddie Hegwood, and he had several injuries including gunshot wounds to his leg and head. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Hegwood was transported to Eskenazi Hospital where he later died from his wounds.

During the course of the investigation by Hendricks County Sheriff's detectives, vast amounts of social media information and cell phone evidence were uncovered indicating the defendant, along with Tyreeonty Jackson, Kamerion Moody and Jeremy Perez, were in a gang rivalry with Mr. Hegwood and the surviving victim. The evidence presented at trial was that on the day of the murder the defendant met up with Moody, Jackson, and Perez in the area of 56th St. and Georgetown Rd. where the victims were located. They then followed Mr. Hegwood and his passenger to a neighborhood on the eastside of Brownsburg where they drove alongside the victim's vehicle and opened fire. The victim's vehicle and a nearby residence were struck repeatedly. Mr. Hegwood was shot in the leg and head. He died at the hospital. The other passenger who was nearly struck as a bullet ripped through his sweatshirt escaped without injuries.

On November 19, 2021, after a four-day jury trial, the jury came back with guilty verdicts on each criminal count and one of two sentencing enhancements. Today, the court sentenced the defendant to 55 years for Murder with an additional 55 years for the Criminal Organization Enhancement as well as 20 years for Attempted Murder on Mr. Hegwood's passenger. The total sentence is 130 years at the Indiana Department of Corrections with no time suspended.

At this time, the Hendricks County Prosecutor's Office has no further comment as the co-defendants' cases are still pending.

Our K9 program is a vital service for the Town of Danville. K9 Zeke and his handler, K9 Sergeant Slayback, are deployed hundreds of times a year and are used to locate illicit drugs, track missing individuals who have wandered off and chase bad guys when they are violent or choose to run from the police. K9 Zeke has reached the end of his long working career and he's ready to retire and enjoy his time at home while a new K9 partner hits the streets of Danville.

To ensure K9 Zeke can retire next month and to secure a new partner for K9 Sergeant Slayback, we are excited to launch our 2021 DMPD K9 Fundraiser! We have a goal of raising $6500, which will be added to the funds of two additional grants, to pay for K9 Sergeant's new partner and to also add a second K9 Unit for additional coverage for the Town of Danville.

Monetary donations will be accepted at our Administrative Office during normal business hours, or checks can be sent to 49 N Wayne St Danville, IN 46122 Attn. Danville Police Department with a memo line on the check reading "Police Department K9 Fund". If you have any questions regarding donations, please call 317-745-4180 and choose option "5".
