Today we honor James Franklin “Bud” Hardesty. On February 9th, 1949 at 1:30pm, the Lizton Fire Department responded to a house fire. Fireman Bud Hardesty was attempting to cut off the electricity to the house by scaling the power pole via a ground ladder. Tragically, Fireman Hardesty was killed in the line of duty by electrocution on only the second fire in the history of the LUTVFD.
The fatal events of that day did not go unheralded. As of result of the investigation into the loss of Fireman Hardesty, ruled an accident by the State Fire Marshall, many recommendations and safety practices were established when operating at a fire in which power lines or live electrical service was a concern. Some of these guidelines, after many revisions, are still in place today.
This is the only L.O.D.D. in the departments history. Unfortunately there are no pictures of Bud, however I have included the newspaper article from the IndyStar.
We would like to reach out to our wonderful community and ask if anyone has any pictures of Bud to please send them to us. We would like to have some sort of memorial in our fire station for him.
