Sterling Ranch Featured on CBS4 for Rainwater Innovation
Sterling Ranch was recently highlighted in a news story that showcased Colorado’s first rainwater-harvesting pilot program as it moves through water court review. The feature spotlighted our community’s role as the state’s only neighborhood-scale pilot site, where years of research are now helping demonstrate how captured rainwater can be used for non-potable irrigation in a way that supports water efficiency and long-term drought resilience. The project continues to draw statewide attention as a model for how thoughtful planning and innovation can help Colorado make better use of every drop.

We have recently received reports of a bear getting into trash in Prospect. As a reminder, residents should place trash bins out only on the morning of pickup and bring them back in promptly after collection. Store your trash bins in your garage or purchase bear locks if you keep them outdoors.
Living in Sterling Ranch means sharing the landscape with wildlife. From deer and elk to foxes, coyotes, rabbits, snakes, and the occasional bear, encounters with wild animals are part of life here. These animals can be fascinating to observe, but they should always be admired from a safe distance and never approached or fed.
As temperatures warm, bears become more active in our area, and unsecured trash is one of their biggest attractants. With an incredible sense of smell, bears can detect food from more than a mile away and quickly learn where easy meals can be found. Once bears become accustomed to human food sources, they often return repeatedly, creating safety concerns for residents and putting the animals themselves at risk.
That's why wildlife experts use the phrase: "A fed bear is a dead bear." Bears that lose their natural fear of people may ultimately need to be relocated or euthanized.
If you encounter a bear, make noise and, if appropriate, safely haze it away. For wildlife concerns or to report problematic wildlife activity, contact Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
By securing trash, avoiding intentional or accidental feeding, and giving wildlife plenty of space, we can help keep our community safe while ensuring that Sterling Ranch remains a place where people and wildlife can coexist responsibly.
Let's all work together to keep our neighborhood safe and our wildlife wild!
