A cesspool is basically a hole in the ground that is used to discharge untreated sewage. There are various types when it comes to its construction but they all serve the same purpose. According to Hawaiʻi state law, cesspools are outdated and no longer permitted to be built. In fact, all current cesspools need to be replaced or converted into septic tanks by the year 2050. But don't worry, we are here to help you whether you have a cesspool or convert to a septic tank in the future!

A typical septic system consists of a septic tank and a drainfield (or soil absorption field). The septic tank is a buried, water-tight container. Its job is to hold the wastewater long enough to allow solids to settle down to the bottom forming sludge, while the oil and grease floats to the top as scum. Compartments and a T-shaped outlet prevent the sludge and scum from leaving the tank and traveling into the drainfield area.

With that said, cesspools and septics are not treated exactly the same when it comes to maintenance and service!!!
