I’ve had this piece of maple leaned cluttered against the shop wall for five years, waiting for the proper project. When Rhonda came to ask about an altar piece for her daughter’s wedding, I looked over her shoulder and said, “How about this one? It has about everything you’d want in a stick of maple: ambrosia beetle markings, bird’s eye figuring, and a beautiful curl. I think it’d make a lovely cross.”
The base of out of black cherry, turned on the lathe.

Finished up a series of ten bowls from trees and limbs that blew down on the Ashland Estate of former U.S. Senator Henry Clay. One of the trees dated 184 years old. From two Kentucky coffee trees I turned six bowls, one from a Norway Spruce, one from Cherry, and two from the limb of a Black Maple that still stands tall on the north lawn. These will be for sale in the gift shop on the grounds. I’m honored to be a little part of the long history of
this beautiful spot in my hometown.
