Welcome to Ashburn Driving School, a family-owned road navigation academy founded in 2013 by Lyle Tulloch, a native Northern Virginian.
Ashburn Driving School offers comprehensive behind-the-wheel defensive driver instruction
and provides the highest level of professional training to each and every one of our students,
all while meeting and surpassing
the requirements of a fully DMV-regulated, licensed, bonded, and insured, driver education academy.

A month or so ago, Cathy was driving on Route 66 East at dusk, around 7pm, and seemingly out of nowhere, a coyote jumped from the side of the road directly into the high-speed traffic. Cathy was traveling at about 50mph and hit her brakes as safely as she could so as to avoid above all causing an accident and also to hopefully avoid hitting the animal. The coyote was fast and was able to outrun her vehicle, which he did for a second or two, and then he did some kind of quick spin-and-circle right in the middle of all the traffic and jumped back onto the side road and into the woods as quickly as he had appeared.
Wanted to post this to create awareness that this sort of thing really can happen; we need to be alert and ready at every moment while navigating the roadways to handle situations like these that have the potential for grave harm.
Thankfully Cathy and all the other drivers around this coyote were able to navigate successfully.
Here's some information in an article from years ago, but there's plenty of further updated information if you google "coyotes in Fairfax County VA":
https://m.facebook.com/fairfaxcountyPD/photos/suspected-coyote-attack-in-annandale-a-dog-is-believed-to-have-been-killed-overn/1806162089425920/
SUSPECTED COYOTE ATTACK IN ANNANDALE: A dog is believed to have been killed overnight Sunday in a suspected coyote attack in the 7000 block of Bradley Circle in Annandale. The pet had been let out in the backyard of a home to use the bathroom, and could not be located by its owner hours later. When the owner went back out to look again, the dog was found dead just outside the yard. An animal matching the description of a coyote had been seen nearby both before and after the suspected attack.
Wildlife officials have experienced an increase in the number of calls reporting coyote sightings in recent weeks across Fairfax County. Coyotes are now established and widespread in Fairfax County so it is important for residents to know and understand a bit more about them in order to safely coexist with these secretive wild neighbors.
Unprovoked coyote attacks on humans are very rare. In most cases where coyotes have acted aggressively, a coyote is responding to the presence of a dog, is in close proximity of a den with pups, or has become too comfortable around humans, often a result of people feeding them.
Precautions should be taken in areas where coyotes are active to minimize encounters with people and their pets.
β’ Never feed or attempt to βtameβ a coyote.
β’ Place garbage and compost in an animal-proof container, such as a metal trash can with latches on the lid or secure with bungee cords.
β’ Keep trash inside until the morning of trash pick-up whenever possible.
β’ Do not feed pets outside or store pet food outside.
β’ Put away bird feeders at night to avoid attracting small rodents and other coyote prey.
β’ Trim shrubbery to ground level to remove hiding cover.
β’ Close up all openings under porches/decks, crawl spaces or out-buildings where animals might establish dens.
β’ Keep small pets inside and do not leave unattended when outside.
β’ Be alert at dusk and dawn. Coyotes are most active at night and early morning hours; however, they may be active during the day in search of food or denning sites.
If a coyote is sighted around your residence, let it know it will not be tolerated. Use hazing techniques to frighten coyotes from the property or exclusion measures to restrict their access in areas where they are unwanted. In some cases, repeat hazing attempts may be necessary to get a coyote to leave an area.
β’ Do not run from a coyote.
β’ From a safe position, yell and wave your arms at the coyote.
β’ Use noisemakers such as whistles, air horns, bells, βshakerβ cans full of marbles or pennies, or pots and pans banged together.
β’ Throw non-edible objects in the direction of the coyote including sticks, small rocks, cans, or tennis balls.
β’ Spray the coyote with a water hose.
β’ Install motion sensor lights or a motion-activated sprinkler around your home.
β’ Install fencing to keep coyotes out of yards. Fencing should be at least 6 feet tall, have an outward slanting overhang or roller-type device to prevent coyotes from climbing or jumping, and have an L-shaped mesh apron buried one to two feet to deter digging. Few fences are completely coyote-proof.

Guard against driver fatigue: keep some peppermints and protein bars in your glove compartment; so when you feel like you're becoming fatigued, these will help keep you alert until you can safely pull over, rest your eyes and get refreshed.

Enjoy the break, but stay as far away from the roads as possible, and please be especially cautious when the plows come through. Note the story in this article which occurred just this morning right here in Ashburn. We are so very sorry for this gentleman and his family; how very sad.
