Bursa injections are primarily administered to soothe joint pain that results from bursitis (inflammation of the bursa), arthritis, and other inflammatory diseases. A bursa is a gel-filled sac that help tendons and muscles slide over the bone; bursae can be located in one’s shoulder, hips, elbows, knees, etc. Swollen bursae can be a cause of joint pain in the region, and the use of a corticosteroid in conjunction with a local anesthetic can help to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. Almost 1 out of 3 people in the United States will develop shingles during their lifetime.

Shingles typically begins with pain and symptoms such as sensitivity to touch, numbness, or tingling. After a few days, the condition progresses into a painful, blistering rash.

If left untreated, shingles pain has the potential to become chronic leading to a condition called postherpetic neuralgia. At Nova Interventional Pain and Spine, we understand how shingles pain affects the body and can prescribe pain medications that may prevent further nerve damage. If medication is not enough other treatment options are available to help target and tackle pain. It is important patients seek pain treatment early to reduce their risk of developing chronic shingles pain. Call us today at 571-510-3815 for an evaluation!

If you are one of the many millions of Americans suffering from back pain here are 5 pain therapies to try at home:

1. Limit your bed rest. If you have lower back pain, bed rest can amount to a loss of about 1% of muscle strength each day, so make sure to keep moving as much as possible.

2. Get active! Maintenance of physical activity is essential to treating and preventing back pain.

3. Apply ice or heat therapy to relieve areas of soreness

4. Be mindful of what you’re eating. Excess weight around the mid-section can be especially strenuous for your lower back. To avoid overeating try planning ahead with healthy meals, set a schedule of when you are going to eat each day.

5. Improve your posture. Some simple techniques include:
* Try to keep the spine erect as much as possible and avoiding slouching
* Keep a pillow or rolled-up towel behind the lower back while sitting
* Keep your feet elevated to relieve pressure from the back during prolonged periods of sitting
* Prolonged sitting can add extra pressure to the spine so be sure to take frequent breaks to stretch and consider using a standing desk

Make a new year’s resolution to be pain free in 2020! Here are some tips for a pain free new year:

☑️Weight Loss. The extra amount of tissue on your body from obesity puts a heavier load on your bones and joints. Just like an overloaded piece of equipment, your joints can start breaking down faster than normal. The extra fat cells in the body release substances that cause a constant low level of inflammation worsening pain symptoms
☑️Hot and Cold Therapy. Heat—from a heating pad or a hot bath will boost blood flow and allow muscles to relax. Cold—from ice or a cold pack helps to slow circulation and reduce swelling, slowing the body’s ability to send pain messages.
☑️Massage. Relaxing muscles and sore tissues with massage can be therapeutic in easing chronic pain.
☑️Physical Therapy. moving and stretching your muscles will help to strengthen your joints and reduce pain symptoms

We look forward to helping you live pain free. Call us today at 571-510-3815 to schedule an appointment! No referral necessary!
