What’s it like owning a dog walking and pet sitting company?

- I get a lot of questions like “what’s your real job?” and “when are you going to get a normal 9-5 job?”. The dog walking and pet sitting industry bring in over 2.5 billion dollars per year and is growing. This is my real job. It may not have the standard 9-5 hours, but it is so rewarding.
- Most people think we play with animals all day. While that’s definitely part of the job, it’s not the entire job. There’s a lot of cleaning up after pets, walking…so much walking, and communicating with the pet’s humans.
- I get laughed out of networking meetings often. That is, until I announce that we service over 150 families, have over 300 pets on our roster, and that I manage 7 employees. I’m usually still not taken seriously (let’s not forget the time that someone asked me if I was old enough to drink at a happy hour event🥴) but it still feels good to represent the fact that this is, in fact, a real job.
- I have the pleasure of providing comfort to animals when their humans are away, bringing back happy, tired dogs from walks and hikes, and having an insane level of trust with my clients: they give me keys to their house, if that isn’t trust I’m not sure what is.
- Owning a dog walking and pet sitting company is more of a lifestyle choice than a job. I miss lots of family gatherings, vacations, and other events because I can never be too far from home for too long. Taking off of work requires months notice to clients and staff to ensure everyone’s needs are met.
- My blood, sweat, and tears are in this business. I’ve been attacked by a 200lbs dog and had to be out of work for 2 months. I’ve fallen down on walks and bled the whole way home. I cry every. single. time. a client’s pet crosses the rainbow bridge; it never gets easier. Even with a 7 person team, I work 7 days a week because some pets can’t handle a walker switch; they’re too nervous or it’s too much stress on them to meet someone new.
- I love what I do. I encourage anyone who is passionate about animals to join the industry and dedicate their life to caring for animals.
